In 1795, Scots-Irish immigrants founded a small town on the east side of present-day Sayreville Creek known as "New Ulster". They named it after their homeland of Scotland; Ulster being one of several regions they traversed during their journey westward. From its inception, New Ulster functioned as a frontier outpost watchtower against Native American raids into this territory which stretched from Perth Amboy to Easton Township. The first mention ofSAYREVILLE comes from 1624 when Dutch settlers came to settle in what is now Hunterdon County.(Shannango) For many years there were no towns within Hunterdon Township because Scotch Irish residents had exclusive rights to build them according to their custom dating back to pre Revolutionary War days! But with the arrival of John Dighton & company on October 3rd 1795 with their families (the first white people ever admitted into this township), things started changing rapidly! This group of pioneers were instrumental in shaping our current day town center including laying out streets and setting up businesses! With over 150 years OF INDUSTRY experience at our disposal, we can proudly say that SAYREVILLE IS A TOWN THAT HAD IT ALL! /p>
