Rutherford, New Jersey is home to the Cannonball Gun Club, a relic of America's frontier past. The club was founded in 1838 by Captain John A. Cannon and his son Colonel John A. Cannon II as a militia group to hunt buffalo and other game in the area. The club continued to operate until 1954, when it merged with the American Rifle Association (ARA) to form the NRA. Rutherford is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Rutherford were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1674 and1675. For many years it was thought that Rutherford was named for Sir Rutherford Appleby, 1st Baronet (1563-1637), a member of Parliament from England who had an estate near the town but no connection with it. In 1892 an article in "The Atlantic Monthly" identified Sir Rutherford's namesake as Christopher Rutherfurd (1785-1864), 11th Earl of Durham, owner of a large estate near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, England. However, this identification was widely disputed until 1931 when Lord Burleigh verified it on behalf of the British Museum Library by consulting manuscripts at Durham University. In 1795 John Woolridge built a mill on the Hackensack River between what are now town limits and East Rutherford and started to produce flour and other goods thereon for local consumption. By 1800 he had erected two gristmills and four sawmills within his mill complex which still stands today along one side of the river and includes several contributing mills dating back to before 1700 including: Millenia gristmill #1; Millenia sawmill #2; Wharf Mills #1 & #2; Dockyard Grinding Plant No 6; Hackensack Flour Mill No 3 also known as North Hackensack Flour Mill Ruins). He also operated one ferry acrossriver from his mill complex to get his products to market in nearby Newark or Elizabethport. By 1810 Woolridge's business had become so successful that he decided to move his entire operation into new premises on Edison Road between what are now town limits and West Rutherford where he continued producing flour and other goods under various names until 1832 when he became Jenning & Woolridge Paper Merchants Ltd., becoming one of the first paper merchants licensed by the New Jersey State Board of Elections in 1798 It should be noted that though Jenning & Woolridge Paper Merchants Ltd.'s original premises may have been located within present day town limits, they did not actually commence operations until after they moved from their old location – principally because their predecessor company North Hackensack Flour Manufacturing Company failed to maintain its charter as required by state law . As early as 1800 there were plans for a courthouse which never materialized however until 1830 when Judge Abraham Witchell laid out plans for what would eventually become Catonsville courthouse including land adjoining present day townlimits although construction never began due largely to financial difficulties faced by Witchell himself . During much of its early history Catonsville functioned more as a stopover point on activities nearer Newark or Elizabethport while those activities grew closer to downtown Newark Ultimately this caused problems since transportation costs became too prohibitively expensive for small businesses like Jenning & Woolridge Paper Merchants Ltd.) Nevertheless development continues today with numerous businesses located along Edison Road just off I-80 Exit 5 including: A&P supermarket (opened in 1950); Verizon Wireless store (opened in 2007); Dunkin' Donuts restaurant (opened in 1990); Barnesand Noble bookstore chain (); Dunellen Regional Medical Center (); Asbury Park Mall ; Sleepy Hollow Recreation Area (); NJ Devils ice hockey team (). A blacksmith shop became operational between 1868-1875 but ceased operations due to lack of customers. A post office operated from 1830-1835 but discontinued operation because of high postage rates for mail sent through rural areas at that time.
