Rutherford is a town located in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,552 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1776 by Scots-Irish immigrants as Rathbone Township and named after Rutherford House, a large mansion on the east side of town. In 1824, it became part of Middlesex County and was renamed for John Rutherford, an early settler and member of the state assembly from Middlesex County (1795-1800). In 1881, it became a borough within Middlesex County and is now part of Union Township. Lutheran pastor Dr. Charles Halsey served as mayor from 1902 to 1904 and again from 1916 to 1918. At one time or another since its founding, Rutherford has been home to numerous prominent Americans including first U.S. Ambassador James Kilduff (1902-03), Director Julius Rosenwald (1925-27), President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1945-46), former Governor Thomas Kean (1977-79)

Its founders were two men from Ulster who had come to America looking for a new home. They named their settlement after Lord Rutherford, an English nobleman who had been ambassador to Carolina before moving on to become one of George Washington’s vice presidents. After arriving in America, the Rutherfords set about exploring what lay ahead for them and came up with the idea for a town on this newly formed continent. They began construction on their new community soon after settling it in 1755. The town quickly grew because it possessed valuable resources such as coal and iron ore that were difficult to find elsewhere at that time. This success allowed Rutherford to become one of the most important towns in New Jersey during its early years – even rivaling Newark City proper during this time period! The discovery of oil near Philadelphia also helped contribute significantly to local economic development during this time period too! In 1834, Rutherford became part of the newly formed Mercer County when it was created out of parts of Middlesex and Union counties following the creation of New Jersey statehood! At that time, it was one of only a handful OF municipalities within NJSCTP (NewJersey Southern Tier Province). As Mercer County grew more populous over ensuing decades, so did its budget – until finally reaching $3 million ($104 million adjusted dollars) by 1990!!! Throughout its long history as an incorporated municipality within NJSCTP – including both before and after joinerstatehood – Rutherford has always been an active community servant! From providing essential public services such as schools and fire departments; through fundraising initiatives like car wash nights or “Christmas drive”arguments against liquor prohibition; through charitable donations; through involvement with numerous civic organizations throughout our county; residents have always taken pride in their hometown!

Many notable people have lived or worked in Rutherford including: James Buchanan Wilson (U.S. President), Julius Caesar Chavez ( Mexican president), Ernest Hemingway (writer/director), Lloyd George (British Prime Minister), Irving Berlin (composer/lyricist), Wernher von Braun (NASA astronaut).
