Rutherford, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,595 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Mercer County. The name Rutherford comes from John Rutherford, who settled there in 1757. Rutherford was incorporated as a town on April 14, 1846, from portions of Mercersburg and Allentown townships. The original boundaries were: east of the Susquehanna River to the south; north of Valley Forge Road to the west; and along the river to its mouth at Borden Creek. At first it included all of what is now Mercer County including part of Monmouth County and much of Sussex County. On July 16, 1860, parts of Sussex and Middlesex counties were annexed to Rutherford while still part of Mercersburg township; this made Rutherford an official borough with a total population over 10,000 people (10/24ths of which lived within 1 mile (1 km) of its borders). On December 8th 1898 Mayor Samuel Pemberton proposed that incorporation into a city be considered because "the citizens have been asking for such an adjustment for years". A referendum approved incorporation on March 12th 1899 by a margin of 54% to 46%. On July 5th 1902 Mayor James Fenton recommended approval for annexation into Atlantic City due to "the great volume and rapid growth" in Population since 1901 when Census records showed that only 2% residents lived within 1 mile (1 km) radius or less. As per ordinance passed by the Borough Council on August 6th 1902 annexation became effective without further vote by council members on September 3rd 2002 The current name comes from George Washington National Monument located in nearby West Orange which had also been named after Rear Admiral David Dixon Wright who served as mayor in 1906-1908
