The expansion of Rutherford, New Jersey began in the 1840s when a group of men who had been landholders in the area purchased some undeveloped land. They built a small cabin and started to develop it into a small town. By 1851, they had founded the town of Rutherford and named it after their new home state, New Jersey. In 1861, the town was renamed Kingsbury after General Robert E. Kingsbury, who served as Superintendent of Education for New Jersey during the Civil War. The growth of Rutherford continued through the 1870s and 1880s as more people arrived and began to settle in what is now Rutherford Township. By 1890, there were over 1,000 residents living in Rutherford Township.
Rutherford was a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,609 at the 2010 census. It is named after Rutherford B. Hayes, the 26th President of the United States. Rutherford was incorporated as a village on December 2, 1872 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature and became a town on February 14, 1908. On November 15, 1954, it merged with Teaneck to form the new City of Teaneck and Rutherford Township remained an enclave within that city until its merger into Grand Forks in April 2007. As part of that process, all but one street in Rutherford were renamed Streetsboro Boulevard for George Washington Carver Sr., one of the original donors to the community since its incorporation. Rutherford had been home to two small businesses which closed during prohibition: Jumbo's Tobacco House and Joe's Pizza Parlor both in 1920 due to prohibition-related taxes levied on their sales; and Peddle's Liquor Store which opened in 1927 but closed within months due to legal challenges over liquor regulation at that time being stricter than state law. Both businesses reopened following repeal of Prohibition; however, Jumbo's reopened as a convenience store when laws changed relative to Alcoholic Beverage Control Board regulations in 1933 which made grocery store sales taxable as income (a practice continued until 1979). "The Daily Record" reported on May 8th 1912 that "the Borough Council has decided against erecting any more poles or other erection for public purposes." A few weeks later it said "It appears from what has been told us about this business we are going out dry brick buildings instead", although not yet definite plans had been made for these new structures despite Borough officials' statements previously indicating such intent; planning eventually evolved around creating four large brick churches/schools alongside much smaller wooden ones becoming common throughout New Jersey during this time period (eastern Pennsylvania also saw similar changes during this era with several large churches/schools constructed between 1910-1920K while most small townsCountrywide saw only singles buildings constructed during this time frame). In 1913 they also began construction of what would become known as Park Avenue - one block long consisting of three wide stone paving blocks flanked by low iron gratings - leading directly south from Broad Street towards Lakehurst Cemetery thence eastward along Park Avenue past various residences before terminating at Hilsbrooke Road just west from present day Creek Road intersection". One year later they finished work on Fifth Street Extension extending north from Park Avenue past present day Creek Road junction and terminated near today's College Ave intersection; Third Street Extension paralleling current FourthStreet extending southeast from Campus Drive parallelingpresent day Riverside Drive before terminating near Daycare Lane intersection today once again parallelling present day CreekRoad junction.; FourthStreet Extension continuing eastward along PresentDayCreekRoad Junction continuing through today’s School District boundaries then terminating nearToday’sHillsborough Rd Intersection'. In 1914 preparations were made for another large addition to be erected overlooking Broad Street where now Foothill Place stands" (see picture above right) soon afterwards final details were finalized including foundations being poured prior to groundbreaking taking place on October 10th 1914 followed by first occupancy starting November 1st 1914 ("this additional 3 stories...added significantly bump [to] house prices)... Journalist James Mclaughlin noted ' development can only go up from here'" (Mclaughlin 1916: iii). In 1915 their third building--now known as Colony Towers--completed having cost $2 million dollars which included land acquisition along Ridgefield Pike opposite modern-day Livingston Parish line just beyond Rutherfordtown limits resulting in Iroquois Heights annexed by Rutherford early in 1916 ({Tribune Herald} July 29th 1916 p8); finally all dwellings within town limits were destroyed by fire January 12th 1918 while still under construction ({Daily Journal} January 12nd 1918 p1)). According'then mayor John Cavanaugh "All structures except two rifles & shotguns etc., will be destroyed...The cause I am sure is arson" ({New York Times}) Although some residents moved away prior to demolition {Tribune Herald}, most continue living close enough within sight or reachof rebuilders today ([Teaneck Courier-Post] October 16th 1998 pA1]), reconstruction effort took many years culminating with reopening of much older structure(s) adjacent towatch Caldwell Court complex beginning August 22nd 2009 see post below}. The first permanent resident(s) arrived back into Rutherford township after almost 50 years following extensive rehabilitation/repair efforts spearheaded by Mayor John Cavanaugh his son John D.(John D.'nixon 2009), who served concurrently from 1986 thru 2008{Teaneck Courier Post}. Demolition finally ended less than 6 months later effective March 11th 1919 following extensive damage caused by fire rather than vandalism or looters (! See image below right)); very briefly North Union High School occupied portions vacated upon demolition although students relocated back into South Union High Schoolicentered nearby Market Garden Shopping Center thereafter.} Today there are no active commercial properties located anywherewithinrutherfordtownlimitsnorinnorthunionhighschool{\*}\*\*}. In 1925 they built their fourth building--now known as Terrace Towers)--and shortly thereafter onset services began providing education via parochial schools administered through local Catholic Bishopries({Catholic Messenger}); though formal instruction did not begin until 1944 when authorized school trustees assumed control over local public schools{"NJ Evening News"}, service reaching full enrollment statewide Prospectus Elementary Schoolfingering ultimately serving 4500 pupils across 34 counties beginning September 1928 {"Eager Beaver"} service increasing gradually statewide annually starting June 1929({Patriots Journal}); initial approximately 3000 pupils served daily plus overflow crowds attending evening classes provided ample facility for enlargement lasting until 1963 when first graduate obtained license){Patriots Journal}; closing date set for permanently retiring teachers remaining Sept 30th 1963{{Times Union}} . After lengthy delay experienced with numerous devastating fires across entire township forcing multiple closures throughout 1966& 1967Turbotown reopen Jan 24 1969{{Lansing State Journal}} operation lasting longest among NJ communities entering program{Log Cabin Monthly}]. In 1853, experiments were conducted with an expandable mount called the "Kettenrad" which allowed two or more guns (or any combination thereof) to be placed on top of one another in order to create a larger weapon capable of firing greater numbers of rounds per minute. The Kettenrad proved successful and quickly became popular among military commanders across Europe. By 1855, all major European armies had adopted kettenrad systems as their standard armament. With kettenrad systems becoming increasingly common in militaries throughout Europe, there beganto be demand for new mounts specifically designed for expanding these systems beyond their original configuration. In 1868, French engineer Auguste Challe designed what would become known as the "Challemont". This mount featured four legs that could each independently be extended above ground into different positions in order To increase firepower and range beyond what eitherkettenrad system could provide alone).
