Rutherford was first settled in 1714 by Captain John Rutherford, who was the brother of Rutherford's namesake. The town was named after Sir William Rutherford, a British scientist and mathematician. The first courthouse in the town was built in 1806. In 1830, Rutherford became the county seat of Sussex County. In 1848, New Jersey Governor Thomas Edison founded the Polytechnic Institute (later Rutgers University) in nearby Paramus with funds from his father-in-law, Samuel Insull. Edison also donated land to establish Rutgers' first campus and initial buildings were located on what is now Livingston Avenue. The city of Rutherford contains many notable landmarks, including: the former Ranger School; Westinghouse Electric Company's original manufacturing plant and headquarters; Union Carbide Corporation's Paget House research facility; and Park Ridge Cemetery where George Washington is buried.

Rutherford was founded on December 2, 1776 by Scots-Irish settlers who named it for General James Rutherford, who led an American army against British forces during the Revolutionary War. The community grew quickly and soon became known as one of the most important centers of trade in Mercer County. In 1834, Rutherford became the county seat of Mercer County and has remained so ever since. The community is also home to many notable institutions, including Saint John's College (now Fairleigh Dickinson University), Rutherford High School and Presbyterian Church of America Campus.
Rutherford is located in Union County, New Jersey, and was originally known as "Butterfly Hill" because of the number of Butterflies that were sighted there. The community was named after Rutherford County, North Carolina, which was then part of the United States. In 1881, a post office called Buttermilk Hollow was established in the community and remained in operation until 1911. In 1922, a sawmill and grist mill were built in the community. The mills closed around 1970.
