The resulting battle is now known as Saratoga Park Battlefield National Monument. The first cartridges used in artillery were made of lead and other soft materials. By the early 1800s, hard lead rounds had become common because they were less likely to burst or cause injury when fired. The Rutherford family started in the area now known as Rutherford, New Jersey in 1709. The first Rutherford home was built on a farmstead that still stands today. The family had two children and one son died young. In 1727, Rutherford married Maria Henshaw and the couple moved to what is now called West Orange, New Jersey where they continued to live until Maria's death in 1802. Their only daughter died in infancy also. In 1814, their son John became a member of the United States Congress and he served for four terms from 1815-1821 before moving back to New Jersey. John was instrumental in helping to pass the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which gave Americans freedom of speech and expression. He is also buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in West Orange.
