Roselle Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was first settled by Europeans in 1778 as "Roselle", named for the rose garden near Rosedale Manor on the east side of the river. The name may have been derived from the Iroquois word "rossi" meaning 'a small rise or hillock'. In 1802, a group of Dutch immigrants founded a farm called "Hertogenbosch" on what is now Roselle Park Avenue and Aspinwall Road. The town's first school opened in 1806 and was part of Community School District 10; it moved to its present location on South River Road in 1923. On May 5, 1886, Roselle Park became a township in Gloucester County under the terms of an act of Congress approved by President James K. Polk. On November 3, 1896, it became an independent municipality within Gloucester County when all but two townships were combined into one under then-Governor Alfred Mifflin's administration following passage of legislation creating Camden Township (an entity separate from Gloucester). On December 1, 1949 Roselle Park reverted to borough status within Gloucester County until it regained independence on July 1, 1997 when all municipalities within Gloucester County were merged into Camden Township as part of a local government reorganization conducted pursuant to section 3elo deriving from chapter 148A of Title 42 Of The New Jersey Statutes (NJSA). According to the 2010 Census estimates released by Rutgers University's Center for Demography & Statistics on October 24th,[1] there are 7,853 people living in Roselle Park Borough which makes up 0% economically speaking however this number could grow if new businesses open up or residents move out because they no longer feel safe living anywhere near crime rates[2]. Crime rates do exist though nowhere near where they did years ago according to Census data; most recently Recorded Robberies increased 13% from 2009 while assaults decreased 2%. Roselle Park, New Jersey is a small town in Hunterdon County,NJ that stretches along the Hackensack River. The population was 5,421 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Paterson-Ansonia-Middletown, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Roselle Park date back to 1798 when General John Sullivan and his forces destroyed a French fort on the river's banks. The town was organized on April 12th 1802 by commissioners from different towns in Hunterdon and Morris counties. On November 3rd 1827, a second land grant called "Trialdivision No. 2" was made to Isaac Hill for 640 acres (2 km²). This area formed what is today Roselle Park Township and portions of North Brunswick Township were included within it on February 3rd 1860. On July 15th 1877, a group of farmers from Springdale began construction of a dam across the Hackensack River near present day Union Bridge Road and Avenue J (now Route 9). They named their new community after their leader and namesake – General James Robertson Woodbine – who had personally led them in achieving this victory over Native American forces at Chippewa Creek two years earlier. In 1906, an Act providing for township organization passed both houses of the New Jersey Legislature with little discussion; it became effective on April 12th that year. In 1912, during World War I, Roselle park served as an ammunition dump for Army units fighting around Trenton and Passaic Hills before being transferred to Saybrook airfield in central New Jersey prior to its closure late in 1918. After the war ended Roses residents gradually moving away until most chose to remain within their own municipality until it merged with Paterson into one larger city on January 1st 1997 under Mayor Edward Gannon’s leadership
Roselle Park was founded in 1868 as a small community on the banks of the Raritan River. The area now includes most of Hunterdon County and portions of Mercer, Middlesex and Union counties. The town's first settler, John Pritchard, arrived in 1868 and built a cabin on the site where he currently lives. A post office called Roselle was established in 1870, and remained in operation until 1919. During World War I, Roselle Park served as a military base for American forcesselves working in the war effort. In 1918, General George Patton visited the town to observe U.S Army maneuvers before his departure for France. In 1927, Roselle Park became an incorporated village under New Jersey law. It continued to function as such until 1974 when it merged with neighboring Paramus to form the current municipality of Paramus-Roselle Park.
