Roselle Park is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Roselle" originated from two grants of land to five families by George Washington in 1795 and 1796. In 1812, Captain John Roseland founded a small community on this land as a depot for delivery of goods from Philadelphia to Wilmington. By 1840, Roselle had a store and post office and about 100 residents. A second grant of land was made in 1845 to Isaac Brown for the erection of an academy for children which he named after his mother's maiden name (Brown). In 1851, James Wiltse became mayor and built the first schoolhouse in Roselle Park. The village continued to grow until it reached its largest size with over 5,000 residents by 1880 when it amalgamated with neighboring West Orange into one municipality under the name of Newark–Trenton. In 1902, famed American architect Edward Burnham designed a park around what is now Roselle Park Elementary School that included rolling hills and ponds ideal for playing baseball or swimming; it also served as a model for Burnham's planned cityscape on South Beach in Miami Beach. The park attracted people from all over northeastern New Jersey who came to enjoy its beautiful surroundings while shopping at local stores or dining at local restaurants such as Genoa’s Italian Bistro and La Fonda del Carmine. Roses were distributed through nearby streets called “Roses Alley” which still exists today near East State Street and First Avenue North
The Roselle Park area originated in the 17th century when the Dutch built a farmstead here. The first white settlers arrived in 1684, and by 1730, some 800 people lived here. In 1765, Andrew Hamilton, an American Revolutionary War soldier and future U.S. congressman from New Jersey, purchased land here for $8 per acre. This property would become Hamilton's birthright; he would own it until his death in 1802. Hamilton's home at Roselle Park was one of the most beautiful properties in the area – its landscaping is still visible today. He entertained many of New Jersey's elite during his time as governor of this state, including George Washington and John Adams. His home also served as a barracks during the Revolution. In 1802, Hamilton's son-in-law Jameson Livingston bought the tract that now includes Roselle Park from him for $163 per acre (the price had been raised to $200 per acre after he died). Livingston successfully ran unsuccessfully for Congress twice from this district between 1804 and 1807 before becoming president of New York City in 1840. He was largely responsible for creating what is now Lower Manhattan on Long Island Sound and gave rise to what is known as Madison Avenue (later renamed Fifth Avenue). Livingston also founded The Evening Post newspaper here in 1817 and helped make Roselle Park into one of the most important industrial areas in New Jersey during the 1800s with its production of bricks and other materials used throughout North America. Roselle Park experienced some tough times during the 19th century – it was burned down several times but never lost its importance or charm. In 1907, local officials decided to rename part of town after President William McKinley (who had been assassinated two years earlier) following his victory over Spanish forces at Pancho Villa’s place near San Diego Airport – thus making Roselle Park once again one of NJ’s more important townsfolk!
