River Edge is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. River Edge is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now River Edge were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624. They did not have any permanent homes and constructed wigwams around their huts on the banks of the Raritan River. The Dutch name for the town was "Beekman's Fort". Beekman's Fort was abandoned in 1672 after a fight between him and another settler, William Livingston. The fortification served as a military post until it was taken down by British forces during King George III's War (1756-63). In 1795, landowner Nicholas Morrell purchased 6 acres (2 ha) of land from John Sayle for $15 per acre. He named his new development "River Edge". At that time, the Raritan River extended about 3 miles (4 km) northward from where it currently stands to its junction with Hackensack Creek near Sayre Street. This location made for an ideal site for a village because there were no trees or other obstructions in view and access to water was easy. When Morrell opened his land up to farming, he found that many people wanted to come and established homes around what would become known as "River Edge." In 1812, Nicholas' grandson Peter Morrell donated 8 more acres (2 ha), making river edge an officially recognized township within Middlesex County history In 1834, Morris had another son Named Nicholas Jr., who also donated property east of river edge along Hackensack Creek which became known as Easton Heights . Easton Heights still remains one of River Edges most popular neighborhoods today . In 1892-93 wealthy banker Alfred Drexel built 2 houses at 521 Main Street which became known as Drexel Hall . After Alfred died in 1897 unmarried children inherited his fortune including Philadelphia builder James Wohlstetter who renovated both buildings into luxury hotels over two years beginning 1899 - one being renamed Wohlstetter Hall & Hotel while the other became Castle Garden . By 1916 Westinghouse Electric Corporation had opened its plant on Broad Street next door to Drexel Halls building; this made River Endeavor economically important due to its proximity to industry. With World War II looming large over America radio broadcasts emanating from Manhattan via Newark's Radio Tower brought shoppers and residents living downstream closer together; businesses quickly sprang up along river edge such as Tedschuncky’s department store which operated until 1957 when it merged with Woolworth’s chain; thisLocation then led directly into Rutgers University located nearby on College Avenue across from First Presbyterian Church (& current headquarters of Fairview Park south side).
