In 1851, a group of men from River Edge decided to start shooting targets at their home. This led to the founding of the first target stand in River Edge. The name “Target Holder” was chosen because it was then the only place where you could buyTarget tickets. The first stand consisted of two barrels and four posts. Today, there are many Target stands in River Edge, all with different features and amenities. Some Target stands have been replaced by modern technology while others are still being used as shooting spots today.

In 1915, the club became affiliated with the American Rifle Association and changed its name to the River Edge Shooting Club Incorporated. In 1951, the club merged with Philadelphia’s Girdwood Rifle & Pistol Club to form one of the largest rifle clubs in North America. In 1984, the club moved from its original location on Windom Avenue in River Edge to a new facility on Route 1A just outside of town. The current building is located at 9 Ferry Road in Bridgeport Township, New Jersey and is home to both rifle and shotgun teams as well as an extensive shooting range that can accommodate any type of firearm.

River Edge was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The community was located on the upper Delaware River and bordered by Bellmawk to the north, Raritan Township to the east, West Milford to the south, and Weehawken to the west. It formed part of Belle Vernon Township until 1892 when it became part of Mercer County. In 1914, River Edge gave its name to an arm of the Delaware River that ran through the town. The first settlers in what is now River Edge were Dutchmen who arrived in 1634 and named their land "Rivernieuw". They built a wooden trading post on a bluff overlooking the river. The post was abandoned around 1638 because of Indian attacks. In 1764, General George Washington's army invaded New Jersey during his military campaign against British forces at Trenton. As they began their march downriver towards Princeton, they encountered a group of French colonists known as " Les Français de la Riviere" or "The French at River Edge". The French had set up a ford across the river near present-day Livingston Avenue and started trading with American Indians along what is now Route 904 in order to gain access to trade goods being brought upriver from Philadelphia. General Washington ordered his troops not to cross without orders from him and continued downriver instead. When he reached Princeton University on July 12th (the day after his inauguration as President), he ordered Colonel John Sullivan's unit not only to stop but also turn back duelling Sir William Howe's men for control over Trenton Bridge which led directly into Philadelphia! Captain John Smith came ashore with some 200 men escaping capture by General Howe's forces under cover of darkness and founded what would become River Edge as we know it today on August 29th 1764 while still under Russian occupation; this event is commemorated annually on July 29th by planting a tree at Riverside Park in honor of those lost during that fateful night! Aftermath: Russia withdrew from North America two weeks later after losing Battle of Trenton including many members their military contingent who retreated upstream with General Washington’s retreating army
The first European to visit the area now known as River Edge was a French sailor, René Descartes, in 1609. He named the river after his hometown of Edesse, in central Turkey. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1764, and began trading with the local Lenape Native Americans. In 1802, the United States bought land at what is now River Edge from the Lenape for $10 million. The U.S. military built Fort de Vincennes on the site in 1805-1807 during the Napoleonic Wars to protect against British raids into New Jersey. In 1814, Congress created Monmouth County as part of New Jersey and gave it its present borders including River Edge. In 1832, a new bridge over the Passaic River was built at what is now River Edge to connect Monmouth County with Middlesex County and make it easier for goods and passengers to move between those two counties. The first train trips between Newark Liberty Terminal (now Penn Station) and Morristown were made by steamboats in 1849-1850 using natural gas supplies brought downriver from nearby Turkish Point Natural Gas Field
