River Edge is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton–Ewing, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The River Edge post office was established on December 9, 1818. The first settler in what is now River Edge was George Steen who arrived in 1798 from Denmark with his family and began to farm land that he named "Riverside." In 1827, John Pemberton bought the farm from Steen and renamed it "River Edge". He built a cabin there and soon started to sell goods from his store along Main Street. In 1844, he donated land for a Presbyterian Church which became Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church. In 1851, he sold his property along Main Street to Abraham Drury who founded the town of River Edge. Drury operated a grist mill until 1865 when it was replaced by the present mills. In 1870, three men – Lewis Cassady (a wool carder), Salmon Peebles (a cooper) and Isaac Seaton (a farmer) – formed the Seaton Mill Company to build a new flour mill on their adjoining land east of town on Spring Creek Road. This company built two more mills between 1870-75 before selling its assets to James Fenton in 1895 for $1 million ($ as of 2018). Fenton then developed the village into an agricultural center with large dairies and other businesses catering to farmers in what is now RiverEdge Township (renamed Mercer County in 1994). The township grew rapidly during World War II as many local residents took up arms against Nazi Germany; nearly all manufacturing stopped during that time as war production shifted towards American factories located overseas.
