The history of River Edge goes back to 1795 when John Woolridge settled in what is now River Edge Township. Woolridge was one of the first Europeans to settle in this area, which at that time was part of Pennsylvania. He built a home on what is now Main Street and named it after himself: Woolridge's Ferry Landing. By 1834, however, Railroadtown had arisen around a ferry landing on the river which served as an important transportation hub for goods moving between Philadelphia and points northward. In 1835, Horsebridge & Company built a wharf on what today is known as Church Street just downstream from where the current Main Street crosses the river. This wharf became one of New Jersey's most important commercial waterfronts with warehouses being built along both sides of Church Street until 1865 when they were replaced by larger buildings on Broadwalk Avenue near University Heights Boulevard (now Morris Ave.). From 1865 through 1907 Bridgeport Shipbuilding Company operated outfitting steamboats ferried passengers between Newark Liberty International Airport and Elizabethport on Long Branch Lake until their closure because Of pollution problems caused by shipwrights' unions trying to unionize their workers during that time period. At that time Bridgeport relocated its operations upstream to present day Hoboken Terminal Shopping Center before finally shutting down its operations in 1987 due to financial difficulties within its supplier base following deregulation across America which affected maritime businesses in particular). River Edge is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. River Edge is located on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. It was founded by Germans in 1764 as "Riverside". In 1838, it was renamed to its current name after the Susquehanna River. The first permanent settler in what is now River Edge was Johannes Balthasar Kreuzer, who arrived in 1764 with his family from Hanover and started a farm at present-day Northumberland Township. The first school in what is now River Edge was established in 1768 by Peter Kieft and his brother Ebenezer Kieft. John Pemberton also had a school here before he moved to Easton Township two years later. In 1838, when Morris County was formed from parts of Cumberland and Sussex counties, part of its eastern border lay along the river which made it an ideal location for a new county seat. The original site chosen for this new seat was near modern-day Tubingen on the west bank of the Susquehanna River – about where present-day River Edge sits – but due to flooding during heavy rains in 1839,judging by eyewitness reports it would be better off further upriver at more strategic points such as intersection of roads leading into Tubingen from other parts of Morris County or even Philadelphia City (then called Quaker City). Accordingly, on February 14th 1840, voters ratified a resolution electing Southwark as county seat over Tubingen; Southwark's incorporation as a borough followed on March 3rd that year. One important event that took place during this time period occurred when Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest delivered an address to Congress urging them to annex Jackson Township into Morris County because “the fertile lands along our stream make us very anxious for agricultural development”; Jackson Township had been part of Cumberland County since its formation in 1785 (it became Mercer County following its secession from Cumberland). On December 6, 1800, a commission was appointed to select a site for a new government center in what is now Union City. The commission also recommended that an armory be built in order to provide defense against Indian attacks. In 1808, Governor James Kapp created four townships within Middlesex County: River Edge, East Brunswick, Glassboro and Perth Amboy. On March 9, 1809, River Edge became part ofGlassboro Township and on July 1, 1810 East Brunswick Township became part ofRiver Edge Township.On October 15th of 1814 assistance arrived from New York in response to complaints by British settlers about Native Americans raiding their farms along the frontier. A force numbering around 100 men under Colonel John Armstrong raided several villages including those at Glassboro and Newark on October 12th and 13th respectively The first courthouse in River Edge was built in 1812 by Captain Thomas Knowles with help from his friend and fellow Lt Colonel George Washington Parke who donated land for it In 1840-1841 there were three outbreaks of cholera which caused great concern throughout western New Jersey On November 16th 1840 eight farming families from Iron Mountain were overjoyed when they learned that town officials had ordered all donations intended for relief purposes sent instead to Kingston (British India) as war munitions The following year saw another outbreak of cholera which struck southwestern New Jersey hard; over 60 people died between November 7th and 11th 1841 Governor Robert Morris took action to relieve pressure on eastern New Jersey during this time by calling up troops from Canada who landed at Essex Junction on December 3rd 1840 Assembling relief funds quickly allowed many people living in eastern New Jersey to return home without fear of disease
