The River Edge community of New Jersey was settled in the early 17th century. The first recorded reference to the community is from 1699, when John Hammond sold land at the mouth of the Raritan River to Samuel Sewall and his family. In 1727, a group of Dutch settlers founded a trading post at what is now known as Fort Lee on the east side of the river. By 1739, there were over 25 Dutch families living in and around what is now River Edge. From its beginnings as a trading post, Fort Lee grew into an important military and commercial center during the American Revolution. In 1776, following skirmishes along the Susquehanna River between British forces and Patriot militiamen, Lieutenant Colonel George Washington erected a works near present-day Princeton on behalf of Pennsylvania General Howe. The fort served as an important staging ground for operations against British forces throughout late America until its decommissioning in 1814. In 1797, after several years of growth by private entrepreneurs led by Nicholas Scudder, Fort Lee became part of an enlarged colonial storehouse system called "the Great Western Storehouse." This new system allowed for more efficient trade with Britain because it allowed for direct shipments between Philadelphia and London without passing through Colonial warehouses in New York or Boston. As a result, profits from sales within this new storehouses grew significantly faster than those generated by sales outside of it. During this period also began construction on what is now known as Fort Lee Park which included an arsenal ( later converted into a public library), schools (later renamed Hunterdon County High School ), and other infrastructure components such as drinking water systems and brick kilns that would eventually lead to increased economic development around the area. In 1834, after five years of planning and construction spearheaded by Governor John Wirtz Jr., Fort Lee Park was completed to become one of New Jersey's most prestigious residential communities with grandiose architecture designed by architect Philip Hardwick in neoclassical style.
