River Edge is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey on the left bank of the Raritan River. It was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1709 and became an enclave of English-speaking settlers in 1813. The population was 7,052 at the 2010 census. The word "river" is derived from Dutch word "rijk", meaning great or rich, and refers to the Raritan River which bisects River Edge. The first European site for what would become River Edge was located on Hackensack Creek, east of present-day North Brunswick. In 1709, the brothers Pieter and Maurice van der Borght established a farmstead called Vlissingen on Hackensack Creek north of where it joins the Raritan. In 1813, when portions of Mercer County were incorporated as Middlesex Township, Vlissingen merged with South Amboy Township to form River Edge Township. On July 1, 1909, section 2 (northwest corner of West Amboy and East Ridgeway Streets) of township was transferred to South Amboy Township from River Edge Township; this section included all that now makes up North Brunswick Borough and parts of Newark City before being annexed by Camden City on December 15th, 1974. River Edge is home to many small businesses that are unique to their townshIPity such as Paperclip & More which sells recycled paper products; Hometown Flea Market which specializes in secondhand clothes and furniture; Jack'd Pizza which serves up pizzas made fresh daily until 11pm;and several other businesses including Grocery Outlet Inc., Belmont Hardware & Supply Co., Midtown Pharmacy LLC - a pharmacy chain - Bootlegger's Brewery - a local brewery - Jiffy Lube - an auto repair shop - Dunkin' Donuts - a fast food restaurant In addition to its small business owners, River Edge also has one large shopping mall with over 350 stores including Macy's Department Store (which opened in 1957), Sears Roebuck & Company (opened in 1911), JCPenney (opened in 1904), Kmart (opened in 1967), Dick's Sporting Goods (opened in 1922), Ford Motor Company (opened Dearborn Heights Michigan store in 1913). As well as restaurants like Applebees' Grille & Brewery across from PNC Pavilion Stadium/The Meadowlands Racetrack Complex and Diamond Joe's BBQ Pit inside PNC Park/Municipal Stadium complex among others

River Edge is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,857 at the 2010 census. River Edge was formed as a borough by merger of two other towns on the river: Boonton and Wharton. River Edge is located on the border of Hunterdon and Morris counties. The first Europeans to visit what is now River Edge were Dutch traders in 1624 who saw an area that would become known as "Riverside" for its natural resources—a swampy tract full of kelp, clams and other shellfish. In 1764, George Washington passed through here when he journeyed from Trenton down the Delaware River to Philadelphia. At this time, much of what is now Hunterdon County was part of Pennsylvania. Washington's march across New Jersey gave rise to legends like "The Battle at Monmouth." In 1814, during the Mexican–American War era, General Zachary Taylor marched his army upriver from Morristown to Trenton in order to buy food supplies before retreating back downriver again. His army encountered a large force commanded by Brigadier General James Wilkinson which inflicted heavy losses upon Taylor's forces at Monmouth Junction (now West Allis). This event became known as "The Battle of Monmouth Junction." In 1868, while still part of Pennsylvania, Bridgeport became the first city in America to be incorporated when it amalgamated with neighboring Edison Township (now East Brunswick). The town had been growing rapidly since it was founded just a few years earlier; it had a total population of 3,000 people by 1870. That same year also saw the opening of Raritan Valley Railway Company’s new line linking Newark and Hackensack via Bound Brook and Passaic Counties; this opened up whole new areas for farming and development along both sides of the riverfront.[2] As more people moved intoRiver Edge over time they began establishing businesses such as grocery stores (Fidelity & Brother), mills (Harding & Griggs) or shoe stores (Briggs & Stratton)[3]. For many residents this represented their first experience outside their home county or state boundaries – something that added excitement and impetus for future growth. By 1903 there were over 40 banks in River Edge with 7800 residents[4]. Craftsmen built several grandiose mansions such as those perched atopiddles overlooking downtown – these remain some of today's most luxurious residences in New Jersey despite having fallen out-of- favor among recent generations due to zoning changes which have limited their ability to maintain their property values[5]. One popular tourist attraction throughout these years was Ferry Landing where visitors could purchase tickets for access upstream past rapids on the Delaware River - one such trip has even been staged annually since 1951! The River Edge neighborhood in New Jersey was developed on the southern bank of the Passaic River. The name comes from the location where a canal crossed and flowed through the area. The community first appeared on maps in 1820 and was established as a farmstead by Nicholas Prentiss. In 1827, John Morris built a palatial home here which became known as Morris Mansion. The house still stands today, and is used as a museum. During World War II, many of the people who lived near Battle Creek Ammunition Depot fought in Europe or Japan. Some of these men were buried here in unmarked graves until their families found them and reburied them elsewhere after the war ended. In 1961, Battle Creek Valley School District merged with nearby Warren Township to form Paterson Public Schools. This school district has since been disbanded but its name remains as part of local history for Battle Creek Valley residents.
