In 1764, the area now known as River Edge was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The area lay on the southern bank of the Hudson River, between present-day Brooklyn and Manhattan. In 1785, following the French and Indian War, British troops invaded New Netherland and captured Fort George in what is now Jersey City. The British military built a forts along the Hudson River to protect their interests in this strategically important region. The Fort George forts became an important strategic location after they were abandoned by the British in 1794 during the American Revolution. The fortifications served as a launch pad for attacks against English forces that had taken up residence in New York City. On November 15, 1794, a group of patriots led by General John Burgoyne attacked Fort George with cannons fired from boats on the riverbank. The attack failed and Burgoyne was forced to retire acrossriver at Bestfield Heights before continuing his retreat upriver to Albany. This event is often referred to as America's first Civil War because it began when Patriots opposed British rule in North America and ended when Patriot forces successfully defended colonial institutions against Loyalist attackers
The River Edge was an area in New Jersey that is now part of Union City. The land that is now River Edge was part of the Hackensack River Valley, which was ruled by the Monmouth County Dynasty. In 1814, when Pennsylvania annexed New Jersey, the Monmouth County Dynasty ceded their rights to the riverbanks in what is now River Edge to Pennsylvania. In 1841, when Philadelphia became a city, it added much of the former Hackensack River Valley to its boundaries and also ceded all of what is now River Edge to Philadelphia.
