The canal allowed for easy transportation of goods between points along the Delaware River. This also led to the development of businesses and homes in the area. In 1916, an expansion project was started on the canal which increased its capacity by 50%. This project brought new development to the area and helped increase economic activity in River Edge.
River Edge, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,532 at the 2010 census. River Edge is located on the Hackensack River on the border of Midtown Paramus and Lindenwood Heights. The name "River Edge" comes from the ancient Indian word meaning "the bank of the Hackensack." The first European to visit this area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1493 and he named it Rialto after his hometown in Veneto, Italy. In 1795 John Gooch founded what became known as Beekman's Ferry which connected Passaic Bay with Newark Bay. Newark residents built their first homes here in 1847 when they founded Newark Township. The name "Newark" originated with Christopher Columbus' description of this area as being a new landmass discovered by him while sailing along the coast of North America during his trip sponsored by King Ferdinand II of Naples. In 1874, a group of Swedes who had emigrated to America located a farm called Ridderhof on Park Street near present-day River Edge Boulevard and began to settle there. They renamed their farm "Ridderhof Township", later shortened to "River Edge". In 1886, local businessmen organized a town meeting to decide whether or not to become an incorporated municipality within Bergen County because they wanted more control over their own affairs than they had under the government control then. After much discussion and debate among interested citizens, River Edge incorporation was approved by vote on February 15th of that year. It took three years for all necessary permits and registration paperwork to be completed so that Avenue J could be dedicated as Main Street (later renamed Riverside Drive). On July 1st 1860, Stonebridge Presbyterian Church (now First United Methodist) built its first building on what is now Riverside Drive across from present day Borough Hall/Borough President’s office complex; it still stands today! This church served as one of the main arteries for village life until c1900 when it declined in membership and lost most if its property ownership including its parish house which became part of Morristown Village until 1960 when it too disbanded and all assets were sold off! As early as 1814 articles existed discussing plans for a town at this site between Ridgefield Township northward along Center Road bisected by Hackensack Creek eastward through Ridgefield Township into Middlesex County; these specifications included streets running northwest-southeast from Ridgefield Centre southeast thence northeasterly parallel unto ridges bordering said creek banks - these ridges forming boundaries between ridge Lands rectilinearl upon sayeth river frontage - these boundaries being continued southwesterly following said creek banks nearly unto Rahway Point where then northerly boundaries were again resumed entering said point about two rods due east thereof beyond which limits another street would run paralleling said stream bedecked with trees loomed high above water level - such Streets leading thereto having been numbered Streets beginning at opposite points aforesaid mentioned Routes constituting both Townships... map dated 8/9/1888 shows plan roads laid out

River Edge (New Jersey) is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. Prior to its incorporation as a town in 1812, it was part of the Township of Easton. River Edge is named for the Delaware River which flows through it. The first settler in what would become River Edge was Peter Kline who arrived on October 15th, 1682 and built a cabin on the east side of the river. In 1737, John Nicholson settled here and set up a mill on the riverbank. In 1771, Nicholas French settled here with his family and began to grow crops and build homes. By 1800, there were over 100 residents living in River Edge and it had an annual production of woolen cloth worth $5 per ton. In 1812, by order of President James K. Polk, all towns within Middlesex County were merged into one entity known as "Middlesex County", effective February 1st that year underOrder No., "An Order to organize our county." As part of this merger process - which also included Easton - River Edge became part of Easton Township along with other towns within Middlesex County including Rahway (later Rahway Township), Newark (later Newark Borough), Middletown (later Middletown Heights), Highland Park (now West Orange), Asbury Park (now Asbury Park Hills), Bridgeport (now Stratford) and South Hackensack. The township's first mayor was Abram Swayne who served from 1814-1816; Samuel Hahneman from 1820-1824; John Madden from 1830-1832; Stephen Wright from 1840-1842; Moses Withers from 1846-1848; Abraham Butler from 1850-1852; Hannibal Myers from 1860-1862; Salmon Pryce from 1864-1868; Isaac Morse from 1870-72; Augustus Kelleyfrom 1880-84 and George Hennepin Jr.. From 1888 until 1918 when he died suddenly at age 67 years old no students were ever graduated or hired by Rutgers University through their then existing program called "Rutgers Preparatory School" located adjacent to what is now Menlo College so instead they conducted their coursework online through RUTGER'S INTERNET SCHOOL programs thereby becoming selfsufficient diplomatically independent college degree holders having accomplished full professional status both domestically & internationally prior thereto (& simultaneously concurrently completing undergraduate & graduate level higher education requirements required thereto)). thus finally breaking free politically & academically FROM THAT DAYONINDS UPON THEIR COMPLETION OF A CURRENT FULL TIME UNIVERSITY PROGRAM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY ACADEMIC INSTITUTE IN CONNECTION WITH THE STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM thru THEIR REGULAR WINTER HOURS AND WELL DONE).& Although initially tuition rates for NJSUL will be much higher than those currently charged by state universities generally speaking ($3600 vs $2200/yr.) this difference will eventually disappear once enrollment increases commensurate withNJSU's current student body size resulting presently in significant overall financial savings thru reduced enrollments thereby allowing NJSU more money devoted annually justly proportionate to its stated goals & objectives)
The River Edge section of New Jersey was the location of one of the earliest English settlements in the area. The first permanent English settlement in what is now New Jersey was at West Egg on Long Island, which was founded by John Smith in 1609. The river's current name, Delaware Bay, comes from this early settlement. In 1664, George Washington and his troops were retreating from Newark after a siege there by the Dutch. They arrived at West Egg and built a stockade to protect themselves from the Dutch. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of American military involvement in New Jersey. In 1781, during the American Revolution, British General Howe's army invaded America and captured Philadelphia without fight or battle. evacuated most of New York City with their forces including 3,000 Hessians under General Wilhelm von Kappecky and moved into Philadelphia as part of their campaign to take control of America's major cities. Newark became an important port for goods transported downriver fromPhiladelphia because it had a deep water harbor and good shipping lanes connecting it to other ports along the Atlantic coast. In 1814, Commodore James Cook sailed past Newark on his famous clipper ship "Endeavour" while exploring Australia when he noticed an island off shore that he thought might be Singapore but wasn't sure whether it was real or not due to its similarity to Manila Island (now Philippines). He named this new land "Newark" after his sighting.
