In the early 1800s, River Edge was a small town in central New Jersey. Until the mid-19th century, it was an agricultural community known for its rice and corn production. However, by 1814, River Edge had become an important military post due to its strategic location on the river and its position as a staging ground for operations against Native Americans. The town's first gunnery school was established in 1792 by Colonel John Armstrong of the Continental Army. The school served as a training ground for officers of the local militia and for militia units from surrounding towns. In 1808, River Edge became part of Monmouth County and began to attract soldiers from all over New Jersey in order to fight in the Mexican War. As River Edge grew into a significant military installation, it also became home to one of America's first commercial gun clubs - The Rifle Association of America (RAA). The RAA played an important role in promoting firearms and ammunition within American society during the 19th century. In 1864, afterember General George McClellan recommended that River Edge be transformed into a base camp for Confederate troops during their invasion of Maryland; however, this proposal was not approved by President Abraham Lincoln because he felt that such an undertaking would put too much pressure on Fort Monmouth which was already struggling under mounting civilian casualties caused by Union artillery fire. Despite these setbacks, River Edge continued to play an important role within American society through the late 19th century until it finally succumbed to decline in 1924 when monoculture farming replaced traditional agriculture in central New Jersey. As part of this process, Gunners' Row quickly became rundown and derelict; however, some elements remain today including a shopping mall called "RiverEdge" which is located adjacent to Fort Monmouth Park where live shootings are still allowedoccasionally

The township borders Rahway Township to the north, North Brunswick Township to the east, Bordentown Borough to the south and Willingboro Borough to the west.
