In River Edge, New Jersey, there have been gun magazines for more than a hundred years. The first gun magazine in the town was established in 1868 and it was called the Rifleman. It was located on Avenue U in what is now known as the River Edge Shopping Center. The Rifleman was one of the first gun magazines to be published with drawings and plans of firearms. It also began printing its own magazine, which became known as the Rifleman's Weekly. In 1885, it moved to 4th Street and Market Place where it continued publishing its own magazine until 1911. From 1911 to 1975, the Gunsmiths Arms & Ammunition Company operated the Gunsmiths Magazine Store on Broad Street in River Edge. It was one of the most populargun stores in New Jersey because it specialized in rifle ammunition, shotguns and handguns. The store closed down in 1975 but some of its contents were auctioned off and used to form part of a renovation project for First United Methodist Church which opened in 2006.

River Edge is located on the Raritan River, east of Glassboro and south of North Brunswick. The first Europeans to visit what is now River Edge were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1614. A post office was established here in 1785, and by 1830 it had a population of 185. In 1834, the town became an independent township when it was formed from parts of South Brunswick Township. Burlington County was created on November 1, 1849, from portions of Middlesex County. On July 15, 1902, part of River Edge became known as "Airlift" after airmail service began servicing the community then named Wilmington-Atlantic City Airport (now Newark Liberty International Airport). In 1990s the area around River Edge experienced an increase in crime due to its close proximity to Glassboro and North Brunswick shopping malls which attracted criminals looking for easy prey. As a result local law enforcement has made efforts to reduce crime in the area by partnering with other agencies such as state police and FBI as well as providing security for businesses and residents within walking distance of their homes or place of work

There was no standardization of magazines, so different companies made their own magazines which were often quite different in design from one another. This caused some confusion for soldiers, who might not be able to identify which magazine was used for which firearm. In 1847, the first standardized magazine design was produced by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his company, Conte & Cie., at Boulogne-sur-Mer in France. The new magazine had two main sections: an upper section that held rounds while the user loaded them into the lower section; and a band or cover that protected the rounds when not in use. This design became known as "Conte's Magazine". The American Civil War began in 1861 and quickly became a battle between States with huge stockpiles of firearms (the Union had more than 1000 guns whilst Confederate states had around 4000). As soon as troops began arriving in large numbers in each State they were supplied with new firearms by either purchase or donation from their military allies. In November 1862 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 6463 which directed all states to arm themselves "till such time as uniformity of arms throughout our United States may be effected." This order called for every state to place orders for 1000000 rifles, 202000 pistols, 507000 shotguns, 10 million revolvers and 5 million handguns (of which only about 2% were actually delivered). During 1863 production rates for new weapons increased exponentially due to Union efforts to arm all Americans regardless of race or religion (while Confederate forces continued to stockpile weapons). By 1865 nearly 40% of all firearms in America were based on Nicholas-Jacques Conte designs alone - this is largely because most Confederates did not have access to quality manufacturing plants.
River Edge, New Jersey is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey on the Delaware River. The town was founded by Quakers in 1799 as a landing for traders and settlers travelling up the river. The community developed quickly and today has a population of about 350 people. The early history of River Edge is tied to its location on the Delaware River. The area was first settled by European colonists in the late 17th century. In 1684, John Norris built a ferry across the river at what is now known as Waterford Landing. This crossing allowed goods and passengers to cross between the Delaware and Monmouth rivers without having to go through Princeton or Trenton. Traffic on this bridge increased during the 18th century due to developments along the river such asriverboats and mills. In 1812, Captain Isaac Hull built a wharf at what is now called Point Pleasant Beach on Long Island Sound in order to take advantage of increased trade along that beach route. This wharf later became known as Hull's Wharf because it served as an important link between Philadelphia and New York City via that route. Hull's wharf also facilitated shipping downriver from points east such as Elizabethtown (now Elizabethport) and Hackensack (now Haddonfield). In 1815, King George III issued an order authorizing construction of two steamers – one named "Providence" and another named "Queen". These vessels were used to carry goods upriver from points below Kingston upon Hudson until they could be shipped downriver for delivery into Philadelphia or New York City. Because these vessels relied largely upon sail power alone, their passage downriver was highly debated among merchants and politicians alike; some desired them while others opposed their development because they feared they would damage downstream property interests . Despite concerns raised about potential upstream impacts from these vessels, construction began on both boats in 1815 despite opposition from certain landowners who saw this projectasa threat to their land holdings .
