River Edge is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "River Edge" originated from when the area was part of Dutch West India Company territory called Roelandt Bay. In 1664, English colonists established a fort here to protect their land grant from Native Americans who had earlier invaded and destroyed it. The fort was renamed Fort Mercer in 1702 after Maurice Mercer, one of British General Monmouth's aides-de-camp during his campaign against French forces in New Jersey. In 1814, Fort Mercer became Fort Hunterdon after troops loyal to George Washington burned it down while retreating from battle in Trenton (now Princeton). When Morrisania Township was formed in 1870, portions of what are now River Edge and other townships were annexed into it including parts of Newark which were then part of Bound Brook Township. However, all annexation processes occurred at local level so that each township retained its own identity until 1988 when they were merged into larger Newark municipality which still exists today as an unincorporated community within Middlesex County. However, during World War II many of these residents joined forces with the United States military to fight in Europe. These include: Mr. & Mrs. Harry Berman (the founders of liquor store Berman Bros.), Drs./Mrs./Mr.(Dr.) John Auerbach (the original doctor/nurse at Cherry Hill Hospital), Irving Wexler (a leading manufacturer of radios and vacuum tubes), Meyer Lansky (the boss of Dutch Schultz’s crime family) and his brothers Mickey (who ran a grocery store) and Joe (who operated a brewery). River Edge experienced significant growth during postwar years as more people migrated into the area looking for opportunities that were available only here – such as high-tech jobs in Newark or new housing developments like Cross Roads Shopping Center on Summit Avenue which opened in 1957 followed by other shopping centers throughout eastern Jersey Shore communities that followed thereafter including Atlantic City when it became an independent city status same year; all this while remaining completely rural up until recently due largely to lack thereof industrialization along riverfront creating immense tracts formerly extending beyond current borders such as portions now located inside Trenton proper including parts currently called “River Side” - making it one unique case Study on American Towns post-WWII has never attempted before! The first European to visit the area now known as River Edge was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after a bend of the river he had seen, the "Riva delle Conte" (river of Counts). The First Dutch settlement at present-day River Edge was established by Hendrick Corstiaensen in 1608. In 1764, George Washington and his army passed through the area on their way to Trenton. In 1814, General John Armstrong's army crossed the Delaware River and encamped at nearby West Trenton.
