River Edge is a borough in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. It is located on the Raritan River between Newark and Elizabethtown. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. The borough was formed from parts of Elizabethtown and Newark in 2008. The first people to live in what is now River Edge were Native Americans who hunted and fished the river. In 1818, the Township of Newark bought land from these Indians for $2 per acre. Early settlers came from England and Scotland, among them John Dirksen, one of the founders of Rutgers University. He helped to move families to what is today River Edge fromElizabethtown in 1824-26. Dirksen provided land for a schoolhouse and other buildings near where he lived on Washington Street in Elizabethtown before moving his family to what is now River Edge in 1828-29. In 1830, James Aiken purchased land east of present day Market Street from the Dirksens for $5 per acre (the price had been raised to $10 by then). After building a cabin there, he began farming this area which included part of present day River Edge as well as much of Elizabethtown until 1840 when he sold all his property east of Market Street to entrepreneurs George Sanger and George Purdy for $50 per acre (the price had been raised again to $60 by then). At this point most of what is today River Edge belonged either directly or indirectly to these two men who operated several small businesses along Chelsea Boulevard until their death in 1865; their wives also ran some small businesses during this time period including Mrs. John Haggerty's bakery which still stands today on Clinton Avenue near Middlesex Avenue (now called Manning Road). During this time period there were few services available outside the town limits so residents did most activities within their own communities such as fishing, hunting and gathering food sources etc.. However due westward travel became more common with advances in railroads making it possible for goods not only across state lines but also internationally; allowing new industries such as manufacturing/commerce developments along Chelsea Boulevard adjacent to Rutgers University which sprang up during this time period includingDirksen's grocery store mentioned earlier; This change led eventuallyto increased demand within Bound Brook valley that made it necessary for more infrastructure like roads/bridges leading into Bound Brook Valley accommodating growth while keeping close ties with its neighbors like Elizabethtown & Newark

The town was also home to Code-Blue troops who were used for medical purposes during World War II; these troops are buried at Holy Cross Cemetery nearby. In 1969 River Edge became part of Union City Township when it was merged into that township’s government along with East Hackensack and West Hackensack villages. As part of this change, all village governments were consolidated into one body with responsibility for all public services within their respective villages including education, infrastructure development (roads and sewers), zoning regulations (and building codes), fire protection ordinances (including building permits), vehicle registration/licensing/inspection/licensing renewal procedures etc., as well as providing economic development opportunities for their residents through various marketing agencies such as job fairs and agricultural shows staged throughout the year at various locations within their villages bordering on River Edge or adjacent thereto...
The Newark-Raritan Canal was built in 1798 by the Delaware and Raritan Canal Company. The canal connected Newark with Piscataway, New Jersey. The canal was abandoned in 1846 because of low water levels.
