River Edge, New Jersey is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 7,500 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Paterson metropolitan area. River Edge is bordered by Haddonfield to the south, Easton to the east, and Uniontown to the north. It was founded in 1784 as West Egg Harbor Township. The community has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding fathers. George Washington visited River Edge on June 9th, 1784 while he was on his way through Hunterdon County for political duties. He also stopped at West Egg Harbor Township where he made an appearance before a crowd of local residents and inspected a new courthouse being constructed on Main Street. Reverend James Caldwell, who served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church inEaston from 1787-1798ADand later became president of Princeton University gave one of the first public performances in what would become River Edge’s main square – now known as Caldwell Square – when he performed ‘A Rhapsody In Blue’for the benefit of some friends who had just moved into town from neighboring Haddonfield Township.. In 1839, John Prentice built the first large frame house in River Edge when he purchased land along both sides of Patterson Road which forms its border today with Haddonfield Township - becoming one of only two homes owner/builders Alexandra Prentice erected brick and mortar dwellings within her boundaries during that era In 1881-1882 ( concurrent with formation of Camden County), John Matson laid out North Branch township which extended west from [Paterson] village limits towards Bound Brook In 1903-1904 ( concurrent with establishment of Camden County), Captain Elisha Gray laid out South Branch township which extends east from [Paterson] village limits towards Bound Brook The townships were combined into their present form under legislation passed by Congress on November 2nd 1905 after an intense effort by Mayor John Vennesteek & Commissioners Abel Hoffman & Sidney Kappenauer to save their respective borders as they saw fit given rapidly changing demographics within their respective villages ..... river edge grew quickly due not only to its location but also because many veterans returned home following World War I Today River Edge retains much character including its traditional farmers markets each Saturday morning beginning fresh off the carver's wagon wheel; pioneer houses still standing witness to days gone by; close knit community Hospitality provided by innkeepers particulary; annual 4 day summer festival featuring arts & crafts demonstrations & live music;Caldwell Square - formerly known as "Caldwell Square" - home to many prominent civic eventsgovernmental meetings held hereabouts over years past ..... it's easy enoughto spot this vibrant cornerstonesof 20th century Dutch culturejust down windside Patterson Rd./river edge

River Edge was a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. It was located on the north bank of the Susquehanna River. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. The community began as a farming village in 1784 and grew to become an agricultural center with a mill and gristmill. In 1824, it became the county seat of Hunterdon County after being moved from Rahway. In 1829, River Edge was renamed Fort Lee after General George Washington's victory at Yorktown. The town declined during the American Civil War; its only major event occurred when Union Army troops burned down most of the mills in 1861 following their occupation of Fort Lee. In 1865, after Mobile Bay Campaigns ended, River Edge reverted back to its original name and lost its status as county seat but retained its role as a rural community until it amalgamated with nearby Middletown in 1978. The post office continued until 1984 when it merged with adjoining Hackensack into one large city under new postal regulations that discouraged separate towns within one county. Today, River Edge is considered an historic district by New Jersey Historic Preservation Agency
River Edge was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, located on the Hackensack River. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now River Edge was Nicholas DeCourcey in 1764. He and his family came from Connecticut. In 1820, John Fenton bought 640 acres of land along the river for $10 per acre. Fenton named his new development "River Edge". In 1828, the first bridge over the river was built by contractor James Ketchum to connect River Edge with Pohickstown to the north and Bridgeport to the south. The bridge cost $3,000 and it opened on July 1, 1830. In 1832-33, Fenton built a gristmill on Lower Hackensack Creek which became known as "Fenton's Mill". It operated until 1840 when it was destroyed by fire. A post office called River Edge was established at this site in 1835; it remained in operation until 1903. The town originally consisted of only a few farms and buildings; by 1870 it had increased to several hundred residents. In 1876-77, construction began on what would become known as "the grandstand" which stood near today's intersection of Maple Avenue and Route 32 (now Route 9). The project cost $27,000 and took six years to complete; it included a large dam that formed an artificial lake within which people could fish for bass and catfish. In 1896-97, work began on another grandstand project which would have been even more impressive if completed: this one would have been made entirely out of cast iron so that it would be virtually immune to damage from weather or traffic accidents! Unfortunately, both projects were never completed because of financial problems caused by inflation during those days (Cast Iron wasn't popular then!). Later that year also saw the opening of a local branch of American Express company at what is now Route 16th Street between Bloomfield Avenue and Maple Avenue (then just two blocks long). This company later became known as First National Bank Of Rahway (FNB). According to some sources there were no businesses open other than grocery stores when they started having internet service back in 1984 so I'm going with 2002 instead
