Ringwood was first settled in 1784 by English colonists as a small community on the north shore of Monmouth Lake. In 1803, it became part of Westchester County and in 1837 it became part of Middlesex County. ringwoodnj Today's Ringwood is made up mostly of older farmhouses dating back to the 1800s-19th century that are still standing today despite being regularly vandalized and abused over the years. Some newer buildings have also been erected since then but most residents live within the original homes which remain some of the most popular tourist destinations in town. The oldest building in Ringwood is probably The Old Manor which was built about 1784 by Jacob Backus and his wife Margaretta Forster Backus (died 1826). It’s one story with an attached attic and has a Federal style porch with three sides that can be opened for touring purposes. Another early structure from this era is The Great House which was built about 1800 by John Fisk and his wife Jane Cushing Fisk (1768-1836). It’s a two-story Georgian Revival structure with large windowsills, Ionic columns supporting a conjectured four-story red brick facade with white square pilasters on each side andipped gables above; there are additional Ionic columns along one side wall between two stories (it currently stands vacant). Another early structure from this era is The Banker’s House which was built about 1802 by George Mifflin into what is now known as #3010 Main Street. This 2 1/2 story wooden frame house had five bays on each floor with extensive trimming including double doors leading to interior rooms off two wide decksway levels; at one time it may have been used as an courthouse or bank office. Unfortunately, much damage occurred to this building during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 when storm surges reached 6 feet high+ throughout its entire height! Interestingly enough, although #3010 Main Street no longer exists today it still remains adjacent to #3001 Main Street which served as Ringwood's first post office back when Ringwood only consisted of 3 houses!

The fort served as a trading post for many years and also acted as a barracks for local troops during various skirmishes with Native Americans. After British forces evacuated America during the American Revolution, Ringsend House fell into disrepair and was sold off to several different individuals before finally being purchased by John Nicholson in 1794 who used it as his home until his death in 1837.
