In 1871, construction began on the Delaware and Raritan Railroad which connected Newark with Trenton and Philadelphia via Morrisville and Princeton Junction. The railroad helped spur economic development in Ringwood and other towns along its route. The ring road around Ringspottsburg (or "Ringspottsburgh"), completed in 1909 as part of the eastern bypass of New York City, made it easier for drivers to get to Manhattan from points south without having to go through Jersey City or Paterson. This ring road also served as an important transportation artery for goods moving between Newark Liberty International Airport and Long Island Sound during World War II when both New York City and Pennsylvania needed munitions raw materials; many factories located near ringspottsburg produced these items. Beginning in 1968, residents of Ringwood voted to establish themselves as their own municipality separate from that of nearby West Orange Township due to concerns about crime rates within those municipalities combined with lack of social infrastructure common among township residents (e.g., no library). On December 12th,-1988 Mayor John Fetterman announced that incorporation had been granted by the state government after years of effort by citizens groups including theRingwoods Residents Association (later renamed as Community Foundation) chaired by Mayor Fetterman himself." Ringwood was founded in 1790 as a small township located in Burlington County. By 1849, it had grown to include the present-day borough of Ringwood and the adjacent towns of Maple Shade and Mickelson. In 1869, the township was merged with neighboring Maple Shade Township to form a new municipality. In 1951, Ringwood Borough was established as a separate municipality within Ringwood Township. Today, residents of both municipalities enjoy similar civil and criminal rights and are subject to common municipal regulations. The first settler in Ringwood was Nicholas Biddle who arrived in December 1790. He erected a small wooden cabin on what is now Main Street. The town site was chosen because it offered good grazing land for cattle and horses and also because it lay close to water supplies necessary for farming purposes. A store, post office, schoolhouse, parsonage (later called the "Masonic Temple"), brewery (now closed), garage and four other homes were built between 1792 and 1800 by early settlers who lived along the riverbanks outside of town limits. In 1802, John Morrill became the first white man to come through these woods when he journeyed eastward on foot from Newark via Princeton Junction and across Lake Champlain to find new land for his family–the Morills would become one of America’s most renowned frontier families After years of surveys where teams walked throughout the woods searching for an opening into which they could build their home or mill, John Doolittle discovered an area extending northwest from what is now downtown Ringwood This opening became known as “The Doolittle Cutoff” after George Washington’s explorer son-in-law Benjamin Doolittle who explored this area during his governorship (1794-1801). ringwoodsqldcanada
