Ringwood was a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–UMasseter Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Ringwood were French traders and missionaries who landed there in 1674. They named the settlement "Rangrave" after their commander, Sir Walter Raleigh's second voyage across the Atlantic Ocean from England to North America. Frederic Meigs, a captain with the American Revolution's Continental Army and later an administrator of New Jersey, visited Ringwood on October 15, 1777, while commandeering a British vessel in local waters for attacks against American forces occupying Canada. On July 6, 1814, troops under General James Wilkinson burned down Ringwood's Congregational Meeting House following a sermon by Rev. Drury Davison III which called for resistance to Ulysses S. Grant's Proclamation of Amnesty on October 12 that year seeking to end slavery in America. That same day also saw Battle of Monmouth Heights when Ulysses S. Grant’s army defeated George Washington’s force at Monmouth Junction near Princeton Junction in what is now East Orange Township (now Union) County; Battle of Hackensack Bridge which resulted in two American dead and four wounded Americans; Battle of Princeton where Commodore John Vaughan beat HMS "Canada" off shore with 12 guns; and Battle of Dummer Swamp where Lieutenant Colonel Ebenezer Hubbard killed 10 Hessians during their attack on his unit at Dummer Swamp Ferry Landing early morning on September 5th 1779). Ringwood had about 350 residents by 1800 but its population peaked at 1,500 people around 1820 due to waves of Irish immigrants coming through the area looking for land grants or opportunity as well as emigration from Engadine Township (now Burlington County) and other parts of Middlesex County during this time period known as "The Great Migration." Immigration continued into the 20th century with Polish immigrants moving here beginning in 1915 followed by Hungarian refugees fleeing World War II and others such as Japanese Americans who arrived during World War II In 1951 Ringwood became one of 36 towns located within newly created Rahway Township based upon mergers between Rahway Township (northwest corner), West Deptford Township (southwest corner),Rahways Mills Township (east border), Bound Brook Borough (northeast border), White Plains Borough (southwest border) and Middletown Borough (northwest border). ringwoodnew Jerseyan yorktown
