Ringwood is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Ringwood was incorporated as a village on March 14, 1814. On May 6, 1872, it became a town under the name of "Ringwood Township". On November 16th of that year it again changed its name to "Ringwood Borough" after being annexed by the city of Newark. The borough was abolished on February 3rd of 2018 and merged into the newly created Newark Liberty International Airport Authority with its present-day residents and businesses relocating there. The township was originally settled by Germans who had come overland from Germany in 1732. They founded what is now Ringwood Township on land that they bought from the Lenape Native Americans for $2 per acre (or $10 per family). A few years later, two brothers named John and Nicholas Decker bought more land in what is now Ringwood Township for $4 per acre (or $20 per family). The Decker brothers were instrumental in helping to develop Ringwood as a small community with many homes and businesses being built during their time as settlers. In 1814, when Ringwood first came into existence, it consisted of just six households and one store. By 1850, however, the township had increased to ninety-six households and four stores. Ringwood, New Jersey is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Ringwood is home to the Canonsburg School District and the nearby borough of Hightstown. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Ringwood were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1714. They were followed by English colonists in 1717 and 1718. The name Ringwood was given to the village by Captain John Jeffries of HMS "Windrush" after he observed some Indian women wearing rings on their fingers. Because of this, ringwort may be considered a local naming source for both villages. Ringwood became an incorporated town on April 20, 1868, from portions of Burlington Township and Westampton Township. In 1895 it became a city as part of a statewide merger of all Mercer County municipalities into one entity under the new municipality law. On December 14, 1932, Mayor Harry Kapp announced that Ringwood had applied for incorporation into Philadelphia but had been denied because there was no zoning ordinance within the city limits providing for such designation - an admission that Philadelphia's zoning regulations did not conform to those of Mercer County townships which made them subject toPhiladelphia's laws governing city boundaries and property values while they enjoyed full tax immunity fromPhiladelphia authorities. In 1978, Mayor Harry Kapp announced plans to make Ringwood an independent township again with its own mayor and council members; however this proposal also failed to gain approval from county officials or residents due to opposition from Hightstown Borough Councilmen Allan Schwartz (R) and Leonard Schwarz (D), who felt that independence would dilute their power as Conservative municipal leaders in Hightstown while allowing Ringworteans more influence over matters affecting their borough rather than those affecting their own townhome developments within Ringwood limits).
