Ringwood is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,227 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a ring that once surrounded the original Dutch farmstead there. The first settler in Ringwood was Hendrick van der Linden who arrived in 1764. He and his wife built a log cabin on the site of what is now the historic hub of Ringwood Township. Other early settlers included Johannes Rembert who purchased land east of Ringwood from Sir George Carteret in 1777 and Pieter Block who bought land west of Ringwood from Simon Furness in 1780. In 1834, John Pritzker sold 1,500 acres (half a kilometer) east of Ringwood to James Hickey for $2,000 cash and African slaves as part of an agreement that allowed freed men to settle in Union County. This area became known as "Pritzker's Farm". In 1838-39, Andrew Miller bought 1,500 more acres (half a kilometer) east of Ringwood from Hickey for $4,000 cash and Negro slaves as part of an agreement that allowed freed men to settle in Union County again. This area became known as "Miller's Farm". Families began moving into Ringwood during the 1840s when large pieces of property were available for purchase near present day Dunellen and Englishtown communities. By 1850, most residents were white Anglo-Saxons living around small farms or settlements scattered along the western edge of township with few families living within town limits itself. A few black families also lived withinring wood but they did not own any land or engage in commercial activities until after Reconstruction ended through Ulysses S Grant’s executive order “and all free negroes are hereby excluded from this county” which took effect on January 1st 1865 inclusive). In 1868-69 Anthony Jansen donated 3 lots totaling 20 acres (8 hectares) to create what eventually became called "Jansen Park" northeast corner lot #5 being located just north/westof current day Greenbelt Road Clifton Park NJ 07928). On October 10th 1870 Anthony Jansen died leaving behind instructions that his home should be left standing vacant until such time as someone can make it their permanent home so by law it still stands today - currently used by local elected officials as their official office space
Ringwood was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Ringwood. The first post office was established at Ringwood in 1804. In the 1840s, Ringwood became a township. In 1865, Ringwood became a city. In 1898, it merged with Livingston Township to form the current township of Ringwood.
