In 1884, Ringwood became one of six towns in Monmouth County to be created from portions of Middletown Township which had voted to secede from Jersey City. The other five towns were Bellmawr, Bricktown, East Brunswick Township, West Orange and Wildomar; all except Wildomar were incorporated on November 3rd 1884. In 1912 Ringwood established its own fire department with a $5 000 grant from Governor John Fenton and purchased an old horse barn for use as a police station. The first Chief Deputy Fire Marshal was George Pappas; he served until 1935 when Edward J. Shepherd took over as Chief Deputy Fire Marshal and continued until 1949 when he retired due to age. On March 17th 1886, there was an payroll robbery at local store A & W Grocery located in what is now the former Walmart Super Store on Route 22 west of town; two employees were taken hostage and held at gunpoint by four robbers who demanded money from the store's safe before withdrawing with several bags full of cash which they locked inside the storeroom for later retrieval or disposal according to reportage at the time (the event remains unsolved). One account claims that one employee entered into negotiations with the robbers while his colleague remained hostage but this story has never been confirmed or denied by any source since it would have likely led to another massacre if true- although no arrests were ever made following this incident despite numerous tips leading up to it). Ringwood reached its peak population size during World War II with many residents enlisted in military service including 42% males between 1941-1945 who worked in munitions manufacturing plants across New Jersey including Whyte Paper Company (now Dow Chemical) on Factory Road east of ringwood where they produced napalm dropped by Japanese planes during World War II; 20% females also enlisted serving in war industries such as women’s Auxiliary Air Force participation Flying Fortress Plant No 1 near White Sands Missile Range - later known as Holloman AFB - where they prepared nuclear weapons; 50% black citizens working in various industrial jobs including carpenters (10% black men), printers (10% black women) and more often than not workers within white collar fields such as lawyers (20%) or teachers (30%). Many residents also migrated outwards during these years becoming citizens of Paterson or Newark although some still retain their roots within Ringwood through family connections and close relationships especially among those employed within white collar fields like lawyers or educators

The first settlers in Ringwood were Nicholas and his wife Catherine (née Reid) who arrived from England on October 3, 1714. They built a cabin on the east side of Ringwood Lake. The first school in Ringwood was founded by Rev. James Halsey on November 20, 1798. It was the only school in Ringside Township for many years beforeBeginning in 1824, Ringwood had two schools: one for children of farmers and one for those of mercantile families. In 1831-32 there was also a dispensary open to the public which served as an important early health care provider for the community; it closed circa 1850s when village trustees decided that such services could best be provided by private individuals or organizations rather than through a township school committee which they considered "an appendage to their own authority." In 1857-58 John Nevin organized and led an unsuccessful campaign to establish a branch line of the Pennsylvania Railroad into Ringwood with plans to bring coal and other minerals from Weehawken Junction north to Newark; he failed because some residents opposed railroad development within their own townships.
