Ringwood is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,769 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ringwood was founded by farmers in 1792 and incorporated as a village in 1812. The town became an incorporated municipality on January 1, 1959. The history of Ringwood begins with early settlers who arrived in what is now Hunterdon County in 1792. One of these pioneers, John Gibson, named his new land "Rings Wood." In 1812, Jameson & Sons purchased 8 acres (3 ha) of this land from Gibson for $1 per acre ($27 per square mile). This purchase made Ringswood one of the largest settlements within Hunterdon County. By 1830, Ringswood had a population of over 100 people and two stores. In 1835, John Dickson opened a store on Main Street which became known as "Dickson's Drug Store." This store was later replaced by the current Beechhurst Place building which stands today on the site of that initial store location. There were also three other stores located along this stretch of Main Street: Fenton's Wharf Store (now demolished), Hendricksen's General Store (now demolished), and Holmes' House (now used as a home). By 1860, Ringswood had grown to over 150 people with 10 businesses including four restaurants and two grocery stores operated by Hennepin Bros., Incorporated and Jardine Bros., Ltd.. These businesses developed into what are today known as local supermarket chains such as Sam’s Club and Home Depot - both based in Ringwood since 1984 - while smaller independents also flourished throughout these years including Mrs.'s Dry Goods Shop/Grocery Mart situated at 9 EAST 6th St., which reopened after being closed for several years; Mrs.'s Tea Room/Cafeteria adjacent to Church School at 5 WEST MAIN ST.; Thornburgh’s Hardware Store; First National Bank; King’s Hardware; Shields millinery shop; Girdersmith hardware store; A&P Grocery Co.; Chinese restaurant precursor to Panda Express first opened here in 1980(); Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company established here in 1948 (); Tool Trade Mart established 1954 (); finally Wheaton Steel Company started business here 1958 (). Today there are only remnants from some earlier businesses dating back to the 1800s remaining such as Anthony's Tobacco Shoppe open until 1979 (), Mrs.'s Tea Room/Cafeteria still extant () and Shields Millinery shop still extant (). Ringwood is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It was formed from the merger of two villages: Ringwood and Woodbridge. The first Europeans to enter what is now Ringwood were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1676. A post office called "RingWood" was established in 1736, and remained in operation until 1853. The name originated from a description of the area by Captain John Smith during his travels through Essex County in 1686. In 1768, James Robertson founded a gristmill on the east branch of the Raritan River and named it Ringwood Mills after himself and his wife Rhoda (Robertson). In 1814, James Kapp bought land comprising present-day part of Ringwood Township from Nicholas Greaves for $2,500. At that time, ringworm was an effective cure for many ailments including scurvy and malaria. Kapp built a house on his new property which he named "Kapp's Tavern". He served as township treasurer from 1815 to 1830; as well as being an appointed magistrate for Sussex County from 1822 to 1830. In 1840, Jonahey Dolan purchased land comprising present-day part of Ringwood Township from Nicholas Greaves for $4,000USD (€3,700£2,100). His farm became known as "Dolan's Farm". During this time period there were several unsuccessful attempts by people to establish settlements near or within Ringwood township due to difficulties finding enough water sources and settlers willing to risk harsh weather conditions during winter months when transportation was limited or unavailable. Dolan sold his farm in 1865 to Elias Howe for $8 per acre ($/sqft). Howe renamed it Ringside Village after himself and some other friends who had gathered around Ringside Pond near their home during summertime while they fished thereabouts. ringside village NJ history
The area now known as Ringwood was first settled by English colonists in the early 17th century. The township was organized on February 14, 1776, and named for General James Oglethorpe, who served as a commander of British forces in North America during the American Revolution. In 1837, Ringwood became part of Union Township. On December 21, 1871, it became a part of Rahway Township. On July 1, 1951, Ringwood Township was renamed to Warren Township after U.S. Senator Robert F. Warren (D-New Jersey). The township had also been applied for the name "Warren" but it was not accepted because it included other townships with that name in New Jersey.
