Ridgewood is a borough in New Jersey, United States. It was formed on April 1, 1854, from the former township of Ridgewood Township and portions of Monmouth Township. The population was 9,269 at the 2010 census. The community is located in ridges overlooking the Hackensack River and its tributaries and derives its name from the ridge where it stands. The Ridgewood area has been inhabited since ancient times by Native Americans, who built wigwams near present-day Ridgewood Park. In 1675, Captain John Smith discovered what would become Ridgewood when he explored the Delaware River region for New Jersey settlers. In 1714, Swedish explorer Erik Eriksson visitedridewood while on his way to explore Lake George. He named the community after his friend Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1626-1712), one of English settlers in North America during that time period. A post office called Ridgewood was established on December 12, 1813, by James Caldwell; it was discontinued November 30th, 1838. A new post office called Haddon Heights was established on March 3rd, 1905; it became an incorporated municipality on January 1st of that year. In 1861–1862 Major General Winfield Scott's army invaded New Jersey during the American Civil War seeking supplies and reinforcements with little success due to strong Union resistance near Princeton Junction between Clark's Ferry Road and Middlesex County Line Road (now Route 22). As news spread throughout northern New Jersey about this Confederate attempt to cross into Pennsylvania they increased their pressure against Union forces at Red Bank Junction until finally abandoning their plan after learning of British reinforcements nearby which forced them back across the river at Princeton Junction without having accomplished any strategic objectives other than frustrating Union forces partisans being sent northward as part of Governor Andrew Johnson's broader strategy for quelling pro-Union sentiment throughout much of this war effort including parts of Bergen County where many people had left to fight because there were no clear prospects for victory) . On October 8th 1863 Union Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked a small Confederate force consisting mainly of soldiers loyal to Governor Andrew Johnson outside what is now Westwood Village looking for information leading up to an upcoming battle with larger Confederate Army under General Robert E Lee scheduled for two days later at Manassas Junction northeast of Richmondtown which ended inconclusively with few casualties on both sides despite high expectations as a major victory onlyBG Forrest managed minor damage to property while losing some men killed or captured although slight numbers Canadian soldiers also participated in these engagements providing additional support unable to achieve significant results resulting in local criticism popular among some northerners towards Stanton Blair who commanded army operations within three miles

Many notable women lived here including First Lady Martha Washington; socialites like Caroline Lincoln; author Fannie Hurst; singers Lena Horne and Marian Anderson; Senators Robert Wood Johnson Jr., James Mclntyre Carey, Augustus Saint Gaudens, John Fenton Fleming and Alfred Ewing Stroud; businesswoman Clara Barton; architects firms such as McKim Mead & White (1876), Playfair & Marshall (1887), Hargrave & Scott (1911), Cass Gilbert (1915) and Steele–Pemberton Architects LLP (1964). In recent years, Ridgewood has lost some of its popularity as it has become more diverse than before with many residents moving away to larger cities or suburbs during the Recession while others have chosen to make their homes here rather than leave their native towns altogether. Nevertheless, there are continuing efforts by local leaders to keep RidgewOOD vibrant through events like RUGBY tournaments which bring together local businesses from throughout the region each year, arts festivals which offer unique programming including music concerts and art exhibitions, special events that focus on rural issues or just enjoy living close to nature - all without sacrificing quality of life or community spirit.
