The area around present-day RidgewOOD was originally swampy terrain that drained slowly because it was covered with heavy forest trees that grew more than two feet (60 cm) high. Settlement began on a small plot of land about one-third of a mile (0.6 km) from where it currently stands. By 1814, all but four families living nearwood had moved to ridgewood because of good farmland available there as well as access to waterways such as Newark Bay and Lakehurst Creek for shipping goods acrosshat 200-acre (80 ha) tract which eventually became known as "Ridgewood". In 1876, part of Ridge wood Township was annexed into Rahway Township; however, most residents within Ridge wood continued to identify with their original township until its dissolution in 1949 when it merged into Union City Township. In 1870–71 there were only 9 dwellings in ridge wood; by 1881–82 this number had grown to 66 homes with an additional 12 businesses located along Newark Bayou between Ridge woods Road and Broad Street). By 1900 there were over 400 residences situated along both Newark bayou sides including many large mansions built during Reconstruction following the American Civil War which increased trade between New York City and Camden through Rutgers University's Ferry Landing Terminal on Fort George Island opposite Bound Brook Harbor
