Ridgewood was once a thriving town located in the southern part of New Jersey. It is now a small community located in Ridgewood Township, Morris County, NJ. In 1856, Ridgewood became the home of Abraham Lincoln's presidential campaign headquarters and later served as his home stately estate. The township was renamed Ridgewood after Ridgway, Kansas Territory in 1907. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson used the local High School for his inauguration ceremonies. This event signaled the beginning of an era of great controversy in American politics that would last until the Cold War era. The school has been used by many presidents since then including George W. Bush and John F Kennedy when they were inaugurated for their separate terms as president and vice president respectively. The area surrounding Ridgewood began to be developed early on as agricultural land was chosen for settlement because it was fertile ground with good water resources. early residents included farmers, fishermen, and surveyors who surveyed more than 1 million acres within what is now Morris County based on surveys taken during this time period. Ridgewood is a borough in New Jersey, United States. It was formed on April 6, 1911 from portions of Morristown and West Orange. The population was 20,569 at the 2010 census. Ridgewood is located in the Morris County region of New Jersey. The name Ridgewood derives from the Dutch word "ridderwijk" meaning "bridgehead." The first settler in the area was Nicholas de Ridder who founded a grist mill on December 5, 1702 near what is now known as Ridgewood Avenue. On October 14, 1814, General Lewis Cass made an agreement with Sir John Moore to cede all of Morris County to him in exchange for his support against Napoleon Bonaparte during the Peninsular War. On November 2nd that year, it was ratified by both houses of Congress and became part ofaddition to New Jersey. In 1825-1826 two tracts were sold by Phebe Welles Stratton which extended into ridewood today (the well's land still remains). One tract went to Samuel Haddon and another went to James Atwater. In 1828-1829 Isaac Norris built a small dam across Hackensack River just north of present day Ridgewood Avenue and began growing corn and peas on his farmstead there until he donated it all back to Mennonite settlers in 1830 along with other property including what is now Ridge Walk Drive. In 1839-1840 Abraham Davenport built a small log cabin about one mile east of where present day Ridge Walk Drive meets Maplewood Road; this cabin served as his home until he died in 1865 after which his daughter moved into the house later known as Mrs John Fenton's House until its sale in 1922 to Captain George Wessels Jr., who lived there until his death in 1928 also making it one family home for many years before being passed down through several families finally purchased by Mr Harry Weisman who operates it currently as an open air museum starting Easter weekend every year since 1978
