At that time there were only 10 residents in Ridgewood Borough; however, by 1870 there were over 100 people living there with a post office and two churches (the First Presbyterian Church opened on November 8th, 1870 and the Methodist Episcopal Church opened on December 3rd). In 1876 RidgewOOD annexed parts of Haddon Heights Township to form a single borough with a population then estimated at about 350 individuals including 50% Jews; however this annexation did not take place until 1887 because Haddon Heights' incorporation into Camden as part of that city's growth led to overcrowding atHaddon Heights School District boundaries which made it impossible for RidgewOOD districts to keep up with Camden's expanding school system." Ridgewood was formed on April 14, 1788, from portions of Elizabeth Township and Neptune Township. It was named for Sir John Ridgeway (1685-1757), an English nobleman who served as Governor of New York during the American Revolution. The first settlers to arrive in Ridgewood were entrepreneurs Peter Minuit and his brother Robert Minuit. They founded the trading post at Grasmere on Long Island Sound in 1686 and started selling goods from their establishment to settlers coming up the Hudson River. In 1711 they built a new post on what is now Ridgewood Drive in what is now Elizabethtown Township. In 1814, when Morristown became part of New Jersey, Ridgewood united with it as a separate township under the name "Ridgeway Township". In 1838 it lost its charter as a township because of financial problems and reverted back to its previous name until 1959 when it regained full charter status as "Ridgewood Township".
