Ridgewood is a small town in central New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of Middlesex County and is located on the north bank of the Hackensack River. Ridgewood has a history dating back to 1676 when it was known as West Ridgewood. The first settler in what would become Ridgewood was John Whitehead, who arrived in 1676 and named his new village after himself, ridgwod (a word meaning "high ground"). In 1701, George Washington visited Ridgewood while on his way to Trenton. At that time, only 3 people lived in Ridgewood: Washington's aide-de-camp Major Richard Stockton and two other men. In 1818, John Beekman became the first white man to make rafts crossing the Hackensack River from east to west for trade with Native Americans living near what is now Paramus Borough. His rafting company soon became one of the most successful in New Jersey; its products included soap and breadwinners for many families in eastern Paramus Township. In 1824–25, Beekman also built an dam across the Hackensack River at present-day Ridgewood downstream from his business complex which still stands today.
