Ridgewood is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark metropolitan area. Ridgewood was founded by English colonists in 1764 as a small farming community known as Rathburne House. The community name originated from the ridges of trees that surrounded the original farmhouse. In 1812, Ridgewood became part of Princeton Township and later, Monmouth County. In 1938, Ridgewood incorporated as a village and retains its independent governance today. The first European settler in Ridgewood was George Washington Ballou, who arrived there in 1764 as one of 100 settlers from Rhode Island on an Essex Trading Company voyage. Ballou named his new land "Rathburne House" after his friend and neighbor Colonel John Rathburne (1703-1770). The first house built in RidgewOOD was called "Evesham", which burned down in 1812 due to fire set by local hunters looking for game animals (the same type of hunting that would lead to much development around this time). In 1814, when Princeton Township was formed from parts of Mercer and Middlesex counties, Rathburne's farm passed into the township's hands and it continued to be used by owners up until 1903 when it reverted back to its original owner's hands again. The last owner still living on the property died in 2003; however their descendants continue to live on the property today through their son David Ballou II who inherited it from his father David Ballou I (). In 1838, with Princeton Township now composed of only Monmouth County proper – including RidgewOOD – RidgewOOD incorporation took place under special powers granted by then-Monmouth County Executive James Gorder because no other towns were applying for incorporation at that time due to economic reasons like low population numbers or lack of infrastructure (this had previously been done regularly throughout Monmouth County through election ceremonies held at various venues such as county courthouse buildings). At this time many people had started moving out of older sections of town towards newer neighborhoods such as Westwood or Englewood because transportation options had improved so much since they were founded over 200 years ago! The second house built inridewOOD was also called "Evesham". This house burnt down during another burst fire some years later after being left unoccupied for too long during a stormy night; however this did not cause any lasting damage considering similar fires often occur hereabouts nowadays without causing any significant damage whatsoever! A third home also built shortly thereafter which remains standing today within walking distance of all three aforementioned homes is still believed to be haunted: Mrs Kapp's Restaurant located off Route 9 just east side Of Ridge Road - reservations are always necessary for dinner times! Mrs Kapp is reputedly known for leaving her restaurant gates open late at night despite orders not being taken until morning due mainly because she could never get anyone inside customers would scream outside her door!! Although no one has ever been hurt while visitingMrs Kapp’s Restaurant - keep your windows closed if you want peaceable nights !!
