In 1802, John Fenton bought land in what would become Ridgewood from the Crown for $5 per acre. He named his new township after himself – Fenton Township became RidgewOOD in 1892 when it was merged with Monmouth Township. In 1876-77, residents of neighboring Neptune Township petitioned for incorporation as a separate town because they were unhappy with their treatment as part of monmouthshire. drainWorx Incorporated on November 12th 1976 with 8 residents making application which were accepted unanimously by all nine members of the Board of Commissioners On December 3rd 1976 Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District opened up and Morristown filled one seat leaving Neptune without representation so applications continued until May 7th 1977 when community leaders decided to merge into monmouthshire effective October 14th 1977 creating ridgewOOD as it does today with only 8 original inhabitants

Many people from here still return to their homes each fall to celebrate Independence Day and also visit friends during Mayfest which is held annually in honor of Dutch farmers who immigrated to this area 150 years ago and gave rise to ridewood’s nickname “the Garden State”
Ridgewood was founded in 1764 by John Ridgewood. The town was named for Nicholas Ridgewood, a British general who led an expedition against the French in 1759. The first post office was established in 1802, and the first store opened in 1805. In 1824, the town became a borough. In 1974, Ridgewood merged with Teaneck to form the current municipality of Teaneck and New Jersey.
