Ridgewood, New Jersey is a borough in Newark County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 54,569 at the 2010 census. Ridgewood is located on the eastern edge of Newark and is bordered by the city of Newark to the north, Jersey City to the east, and Hackensack University to the south. As part of this process of consolidating local governments throughout Essex County, Ridgewood lost some its built up areas along South Orange Avenue but gained some new properties including Westwood Cemetery and Park Place Golf Course in Bloomfield Township which still form part of its downtown area today. Ridgewood is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,415 at the 2010 census. Ridgewood was formed on May 25, 1814 from portions of Camden Township. It is named after Sir George Beaumont and Admiral Ralph Waldo Emerson. The first inhabitants of what is now Ridgewood were Native Americans who hunted and fished in the area where the town now stands. The first European to visit what is now Ridgewood was Captain John Smith who landed there on November 5, 1676 during his journey from Jamestown to Philadelphia. He named the areas around here including Cherry Hill and West Camden as part of his new land grant which he received from King Charles II of England. In 1795, Congress approved a bill creating Camden Township which included all of what is now Ridgewood except for some land south of the Hackensack River that was annexed by Newark in 1802. The growth of Ridgewood began with its incorporation as a borough on April 10, 1903 following an election held that year in which residents voted 3-2 to create the borough government rather than through a referendum as had been done before. Borough President Franklin D Roosevelt served as mayor from 1933 until his death in 1945 and again from 1951 until he was succeeded by James Forrestal who served two terms before being replaced by Harry Elmer Barnes Jr.. The last Mayor of RidgewOOD was Joseph Ahern who took office on January 1st, 1978 after serving four terms since becoming one of only two women mayors in New Jersey history when she took office following Mayor Abe Beame’s resignation effective June 30th, 1977 due to health problems caused by leukemia). On July 15th 2007 Borough Council passed an ordinance establishing zoning changes allowing for mixed-use development within the Borough limits with special attention given to commercial properties located near Routes 9 and 201A (the main routes linking Camden Yards with other parts of Brooklyn) resulting in this shopping center complex known today as Gateway Mall being built just east of I-295/Route 202 next to Southbound lanes Exit 24B off I-495/Route 33W (just north exit ramp off I-295). In addition to Gateway Mall there have also been several high profile developments over the years not limited to shopping centers such as: MetLife Stadium – home stadium for NFL football games between New York Giants andNew York Jets; Prudential Plaza – home stadium for both NCAA Division III schools Princeton University & Rutgers University; Madison Square Garden – home arena for professional ice hockey games between New York Rangers & New York Islanders; One Liberty Place - formerly known as Penn Station - served primarily as headquarters for Chase Manhattan Bank until it closed down in 2006 having sat empty since then housing various offices tower(s) along its length including One Fifth Avenue -formerly Rockefeller Center - former headquartering site for Citigroup Inc.; etc.). PATH trains serve most western end points within walking distance while NJ Transit provides bus service reaching many eastern endspoints such as Trenton Junction or East Rutherford Terminal (both southbound exits off I-495), Scotch Plains or Sayreville terminals (northbound exits off I-95), Atlantic City or any other terminal situated within commuting distance without needing transfer tickets or buying separate tickets each way like many international airports do today! In recent years there has also been interest shown towards developing areas beyond Gate Mall such as Edison Park located east side close to Route 202/9th Street SE and west side across Route 9S from Gateway mall just north past Exit 24B onto Interstate 295 where expressways meet county lines; Crossroads Landing located east side near Route 202 almost joining Gateway mall but splitting away westward into its own development paralleling Interstate 295; etc.) These additional planned developments are subject to future zoning approvals by councilman Michael Pallone whose term runs through 2020 pending further discussion and research into their feasibility!!!
Ridgewood was founded in 1795 by Daniel Ridgewood and his wife Anna. The Ridgewood family operated a ferry service between the borough and the nearby towns of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey and Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey until 1836. In 1841, the Ridgewood family sold their ferry business to John Stevens. After Stevens' death in 1857, the business passed to his son-in-law George Washington Stevens Jr., who continued it until 1967. After World War II, many businesses moved out of Ridgewood because of its high taxes. However, some local businesses such as JW Marriott still remain in town today.
