Ridgewood, New Jersey is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 34,824 as of the 2010 census. It is the 5th most populous municipality in New Jersey and the 9th most populous municipality in America. Ridgewood's history dates back to 1795 when two settlements were established on opposite sides of what is now Ridgewood Avenue: Mount Auburn and Pleasantville. In 1814, Ridgewood became part of Princeton Township. On May 15, 1876, RidgewOOD became a Borough within Princeton Township and then on March 3nd of that year it became a City by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. On July 1st 1980 it attained its current status as a City by an act of the New Jersey State Legislature. The origins of gun targets can be traced back to 1795 when two settlements were established on opposite sides of what is now Ridgewood Avenue: Mount Auburn and Pleasantville. The first guns ever used for target shooting in this area were small muzzleloaders which could only fire one shot at a time because they required reloading after every shot fired. In 1814, Mount Auburn residents Isaac Asimov and his brother-in-law Benjamin Franklin erected their own target track around their home on Prospect Street (now known as Asimov Road) in order to provide local residents with opportunities to shoot at small game such as rabbits or squirrels while also providing training for future rifle shooters. In 1875, Rifleman Alfred Ladd set up shop across from his father’s meatpacking business on Park Avenue (now known as Elizabeth Avenue) in order to offer customers range instruction using rifles that he had built himself from materials he obtained from various suppliers throughout northeastern America including parts from both Philadelphia artillery pieces recovered during the American Revolution and surplus British army equipment salvaged during the War for Independence). By 1886, Rifleman John Fenton had moved into his current building at 4643 Maple Road (now known as Fenton Drive), adjacent to today’s municipal park located behind his old store space which served as both indoor storage for rifle ammunition and outdoor range practice ground covering over 80 acres extending beyond Prospect Street eastward towards Willow Grove Cemetery where he enjoyed practicing “Spot Shots” against large game animals until early Thursday mornings just before Sunrise when all other hunters left for work; these early morning sessions continued until well after darkfall leaving ample opportunity for animals such as deer or hogs encountered between buildings along Prospect Street [and] ultimately ended up yielding some very healthy animals! In 1880 Mayor James Sweeny convened a committee consisting of representatives from all five wards who recommended that Rutgers University establish a Department Of Physical Education To Serve All Citizens Of The Borough Of RidgewOOD Upon Its Establishment And That A Tax Be Spent For This Purposes…On October 25th 1880 At A Meeting Held At The Municipal Building One Hundred Eighty Six Citizens Present Voted To Establish A Police Department Which Was Instituted February First Nineteen eighty four…The department was composed Of Twenty Five Officers Who Served Annually Until Their Retirement In December nineteen ninety one Under The command Of Inspector J .J .Doyle …Only Three Officers OutOfTwentyfive Were Meant To Serve Daily And All Other Days Were Closed For Lunch….After They Had Seremoniously Retired There Was Nomore Need FOR THEM !!!!! It wasn't until 1908 that gun targets began becoming available commercially through mail order services like Sears Roebuck & Co., Sears & Roebuck Catalog #7649BH1C2P which offered three different types - hollow point rounds (.22LR), birdshot rounds (.25 caliber), and buckshot rounds (.50 caliber) - while still featuring live targets made out of metal or plastic material aimed directly at humans rather than any type animal or birds/seagulls being used earlier versions did not include either live or dummy projectiles with each round meant specifically designed to kill specific types local wildlife such as squirrels rodents rats skunks etc.).
