For many years before that, most residents called themselves "Ridgewayites". There have been several theories about why this name change occurred: One suggestion is that because most of Ridgeway's Trading Post holdings were located within what would now be Camden Township (thus sharing some borders), residents felt they had something to lose by unification with their fellow townshiparians; another explanation suggests that since there were few other towns in Middlesex County between Princeton and Newark Liberty Line - including any near Ridgewood - residents began to call themselves "the last best hope" or "Ridgewood", based on its isolation and lack of competition. no matter which theory is correct, it cemented ridgewood's status as an enclave within its own municipality despite having little connection to either Newark or Camden City Center. After years of growth by developers such as Julius Rosenwald Jr., Smith Barney & Company (later United States Steel), AIG insurance company head Alfred Sloan & Sons Incorporated (later Sears Roebuck & Co.), John Dorney Housing Corporation ( later JDS Unilever plc.) – all of which created new housing developments –ridewood began to lose some of its prominence starting in the early 21st century as wealthier suburbs took over much of east Newark's industrial sector northward into Queens County.. However, according to Census data from 2020’s American Community Survey*, overall median household income within east Newark increased by $531 since 2010 while median household income within ridewOOD decreased by $1,043* during that time span*. This trend can be seen throughout much of Central New Jersey where high-income areas have replaced low-income neighborhoods over time *and* this has had negative consequences for entire municipalities like RidgewOOD that have seen strong concentrations of poverty *and* crime
