Ridgewood is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 15,418 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Dutch word ' Ridderwijk' meaning "village by the river". It was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1732. The Ridgewood Bridge has been named after Robert E. Lee and was built in 1868 as part of the Great Schuylkill Expressway System project. The bridge crosses the Schuylkill River at Ridgewood Heights and connects Camden toPhiladelphia proper. Ridgewood is located on both sides of the Schuylkill River and its boundaries are artificial: It includes portions of Fresh Kills Creek Township on its north side, while parts of South Brunswick Township on its south side form part of East Camden Township which forms Ridgewood's eastern border.According to the United States Census Bureau, Ridgewood had a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 14,788 people, 5,976 households, and 4,822 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,641/km² (10,507/mi²). There were 6762 housing units at an average density of 1,611/km² (4,887/mi²). The racial makeup ofridewOOD was 98% White American; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 2% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%. There were 5 976 households out of which 38% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them,[11] 70% were married couples living together,[12] 10% had a female householder with no husband present,[13] and 22% were non-families.[14] 27

Ridgewood is a borough located in the New Jersey metropolitan area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 71,554, making it the 5th most populous municipality in New Jersey and the 11th most populous municipality in all of New York State. The borough was named after Ridgewood, England where Sir John Thorold's family settled in 1734. The first people to live in Ridgewood were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals near what is now Ridgewood Park. A post office was established at Ridgewood Village on April 10, 1857, under the name "Kilburn". On February 26, 1860, a group of settlers from Newark organized as "Ridgewood Township Company" to purchase land northeast of present-day RidgewOOD Park from John Pemberton for $3 per acre. They built their first homes there on October 21, 1860. In 1867-68 (the year before Trenton became an incorporated city), construction began on what would become Trenton City Hall; this building still stands today and is used as a community center by Ridgewood Borough Council. In 1872–73 (the year before Trenton became an independent city), work began on what would become Broad Street along which many business buildings still stand today including The Star-Ledger newspaper plant which went bankrupt but left behind some beautiful brick buildings that are now used as apartments or condos by locals or tourists. On November 25th 1870 James Kappeler donated 100 acres (40 hectares) of wooded land at Ridgewood Cemetery east of present day RidewOOD Park to form part of future RidewOOD park district; this area later became known as Woodlawn Cemetery. The original donation allowed for development within ridewOOD park boundaries only; developers were not able to build until they purchased additional land east of Ridgewood Cemetery from Kappeler and others starting in 1908 when they developed Ridgewood Heights which includes parts of Woodlawn Cemetery today In 1916 Mayor Samuel French proposed that RidgewOOD be renamed "Newark" because Newark was then being eyed by developers as a possible site for their new industrial center called Essex County Fairgrounds with plans for 4500 jobs – much earlier than when Trenton actually received its current name after incorporation on May 1st 1918: "Newark", appropriately enough given its location near Newark Liberty International Airport within commuting distance also served as an early moniker for Princeton University despite having been founded less than two miles away . After years deliberation among mayors French finally recommended that both names be dropped entirely due to lack support from either side – though Newarkians continue to refer to themselves informally as "Newarks" even though their official name has since changed . However local historian Tom Snedeker credits nearby Rahway with being instrumental in getting ridhood elected officials onboard with changing its name back to "Ridgewood" following initial resistance . A referendum was held on November 3rd 1938 regarding whether or not Toeplitz should be annexed into ridgewOOD instead thereof; voters opted against annexation although Toeplitz residents continue refer to themselves informally as RidgewOOD residents even though officially they remain part of Toeplitz Township .. Beginning around 1950 more businesses relocated out into Squirrel Hill section adjacent ridgewOOD while other sections such as South End experienced rapid growth becoming home to several high schools/universities such as Rutgers University/Camden Community College etc., eventually resulting in significant traffic congestion throughout both communities especially during rush hours caused by increased vehicle numbers trying unsuccessfully vainly to cross over onto NJ Turnpike without access rights !! Residents finally obtained zoning approval allowing higher density development within their borders starting with erection of towers above Interstate 95 just southbound exit ramp off I-95 across bridge over Raritan River
