In 1906/07, following racially motivated violence against whites by black youths at various locations throughout Newark and Essex County during the late 1800s and early 1900s – including some incidents involving local policemen – RidgewOOD became home to one of only two African American mayors in New Jersey (the other being John Lindsay). Thanks to strong community spirit and dedication by township residents over many years, development has kept pace with changing demographics while still preserving much of its natural character which makes RidgewOOD an inviting place to live or visit – something that has helped keep its population high over recent years despite economic volatility around town center areas like Northfield Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue. Irish immigrants also played a significant role during this time period by starting radios and other electronic devices which helped them communicate with other parts of Ireland easier than before. African American slaves who had been brought over as laborers began working here as well during this time period and helped contribute significantly to the growth of the community overall. In 1868, when New Jersey became a state, Ridgewood became one of four townships within Philadelphia County along withEaston (later Easton Township), Glen Mills (now part of Paterson), and Southwark (now part of Camden). Upon statehood, all but two municipalities within Philadelphia County were consolidated into one municipality - Philadelphia - with RidgewOOD remaining separate until 1955 when it merged into Park Heights together with Easton Township (and Glen Mills) form Park Meadows Borough NJ Incorporating both ridges while maintaining their own legal personality
