It is the second most populous town in New Jersey after Newark and has been growing rapidly since its incorporation as a borough in 1874.ridgewood is bordered by Essex County to the south, Hudson County to the west and north, and Bergen County to the east. The name Ridgewood came from two Indian trails that crossed through it: one ran along Upper Ridgewood creek and another ran along Lower RidgewOOD creek. A post office called "Ridgewood" was established in 1795, but it became known as "Ridgewood Heights" because of its high hilltop location. Ridgewood Heights was renamed "Ridgewood" on March 14, 1874 by order of Mayor John Fenton. The first settler in what would become Ridgewood was George Washington Smith who arrived in 1812 with his family from Rhode Island. He built a house on what is now Easton Avenue near where he lived for many years until his death in 1843. At that time there were only about 20 people living hereabouts including six families of Indians who had been brought over by General James Clinton during the American Revolutionary War as prisoners of war. Ridgewood township began forming on November 1st, 1875 when portions of unincorporated Bergen Township were annexed into Ridgewood Heights according to an act passed by the NJ Legislature on October 26th, 1875 which authorized all townships within Bergen County to form “unitary districts” under NJ State government control with their own legislatures and judicial branches without having to ask for or receive approval from their respective municipal governments…. In 1899 RidgeWood Heights was gazetted as a borough; this change did not take place until Borough President Eldridge Hubbard lobbied for it successfully when he served three terms (1901-1907). Afterward Borough president Harry Egan worked hard to keep rid of any vestiges of independent status while seeking annexation into other municipalities – finally achieving annexation into Journal Square (Newark) on April 15th 1912….. On July 1st 1904 Randolph Haddon organized a group which included himself and others interested in developing property east of Main Street between Prospect Parkwest () and Willowbrook (). This group petitioned for township status with similar results as those obtained for RidgeWood Heights – On December 11th 1906 Township Status was granted To RidewOOD On February 8nd 1909 official maps were published indicating that most if not all properties located east Of Main Street between Prospect Parkwest() & Willowbrook ()) had been annexed into Journal Square (Newark)……… following this pressure much development took place offshoot properties such as Elizabeth Townhomes (), West Side Village (&), Montclair Villages (), etc.)
