Ridgewood is located on the east bank of the Hackensack River and borders Bergen County to the south and north. The first settlers in what is now Ridgewood were German Protestants who arrived in 1777. They named their community after Sir George Washington's estate, Riddick Manor, in Huntingdon County, England. In 1814, when New Jersey became an American state, Ridgewood became part of Bergen County and retained its German Protestant name. In 1868, an act of the New Jersey Legislature established a school district which included Ridgewood. On May 24 of that year, construction began on what would become RidgewOOD High School (now known as Ridgewood High School). The school opened for students on September 8, 1870. At that time there were only 10 students in RidgewOOD and all were from nearby Paramus or Teaneck schools. Ridgewood was one of seven high schools built by Moravian Brothers during the Second American Revolution; all but one closed within 10 years due to financial problems associated with the war effort. Ridgewood reopened in 1876 as a girls' high school under new management and continued to serve girls until 1985 when it became co-ed again with Paramus Catholic High School upon merger of those two schools into one entity called Paramus/Ridgewood Township Schools District No 2 (PTY 2).
