By 1870, all types ofbinoculars had been invented and marketed.

On October 15, 1997, Ridgewood merged with Park Heights to form what is now known as Camden-Ridgewood City. The name "Ridgewood" comes from early Dutch settlers who named their community "Werfveldt". When they moved out of their original land and began farming other parts of Gloucester County in 1727 (the first permanent European settlement in this area), they took leave of their old home and renamed it "Ridgewood", meaning 'valley where the woods grow'. The name stuck and when New Jersey was created as a state in 1776, Ridewood became part of Newark Township. In 1839, following the creation of Middlesex County by act of legislature #1 (March 3), RidewOOD became an incorporated town under section 9:4(a)NJ Constitution for towns which were only created for municipal purposes; but because it had been part of Newark Township for so long and because its location made it difficult to obtain fire insurance on a large scale—as did most townships within Middlesex County—it passed into the hands of John Pugh as trustee on December 1st 1840 until his death on January 8th 1848 due to old age or illness; then passed thenceforth to his son-in-law Henry Livingston who also died intestate December 1st 1840 until bequeathing it finally to his grandson John Pugh Jr., born February 11th 1784 who resided there until his death November 16th 1868 passing it thenceforward once more through his son-in-law’s widow Catharine Livingston to her daughter Maria Lacey whom she married November 21st 1830 before moving back eastwardly across Long Island Sound to settle at Westville about two miles from Newtown Square where she died unmarried May 24th 1865.—All three heirs had no children living male enough then or since to succeed them.—Middlesex Co Recorder's office list & map dated 1863 shows 2 lots already sold by JnoPughJr.– Gov't Docs Geo W Davis map dated 1881 nearby shows 1 lot still available w/o sale

Ridgewood was founded in 1795 by John Ridgewood and his wife Sarah. The town developed rapidly due to its location on the border of Essex County and Middlesex County, and its isolation from larger towns. By 1825, Ridgewood had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1851, Ridgewood became part of the newly formed township of Edison. In 1906, the township was dissolved and Ridgewood became an independent municipality.
