The name Ridgefield may be derived from Latin ridica meaning 'ridge'. The town's first white settler was Nicholas Ridge who arrived in 1764 from England with his family. He built a cabin near where he now lives on Paint Creek Road and named it "Ridgefield". In 1806, Isaac Butt erected what is now known as Butt's Hall on land that he owned along with other early settlers in what is now Ridgefield. This building served as the first schoolhouse for the village and also housed local government offices until 1908 when an new courthouse was constructed on Main Street. In 1833, George Washington Bridge over Raritan River was completed connecting Princeton to Newark and opening up new areas for settlement in central Hunterdon County including Ridgefield. The bridge would later become one of America's most famous landmarks. During World War II, Ridgefield played an important role in recruitment for the army because its residents had access to free housing and food rations due to their military service connection or affiliation with companies such as GEICO or Chrysler Corporation. Many of these individuals still live in Ridgefield today as veterans or civilians who have experienced wartime memories here townsfolk often share stories about times they received preferential treatment from authorities or were able to get away with certain activities because of their connections to industry or military service (e.g., being blacklisted). In 1951, during Operation Neptune’s Spear which targeted North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, many residents of Ridgefield enlisted in patriotic efforts throughout Hunterdon County by working at various factories across town while others volunteered their time playing sports games at high schools across county boundaries - something that continues to this day! Today, much like back then when rifle ranges opened up all over town so people could shoot deer without getting into trouble; there are also basketball courts ( defunct ); soccer fields; inline skates arenas; two golf courses; three tennis Courts; dog parks etc.; ridgefields economy revolves around its immense number of active volunteers affiliated with many different organizations who assist citizens both directly & indirectly within their communities through various programs ranging from those providing logistical support thru fundraising events all the way thru social media marketing/public relations initiatives
Ridgefield was founded in 1764 by George Ridge and his wife, Sarah. The first town meeting was held on July 15, 1764. On November 3, 1768, the first school was opened in Ridgefield with 26 students. The first post office opened in Ridgefield on October 9, 1802. In 1814, a Presbyterian church was built in Ridgefield and the town became a Presbyterian parish. On January 1, 1870, the new township of Ridgefield was formed from part of West Orange Township.
