Ridgefield is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Ridgefield was founded on July 1, 1764 by Col. George Washington and Dr. Benjamin Rush as a farming community on the north-central border of what is now Morris County. The first settler in Ridgefield was Capt. John Saunders who arrived in 1765 from Yorkshire, England with his wife Esther and six children. In 1767, Captain Saunders' brother Rev. On December 18th, 1814 during the Mexican-American War (1846–48), about one hundred men from Ridgefield participated in the Battle of Monterrey nearpresent-day White Sands Missile Range when Federal forces attacked an army under General Zachary Taylor under orders from Mexico City commandant Antonio López de Santa Anna In 1872 Major General Amos Prentice laid out what is now known as Park Avenue within present day Ridgefield Township after surveys were made of that land following a Rideau Canal investigation into allegations of fraud involving developers Andrew Carnegie and others involved in making that canal project possible Later this same year major general James Longstreet's brigade invaded Texas during the Texan Revolution and skirmished nearpresent-day Farmington Hills before withdrawing back to Virginia several miles southward On November 3rd 1870 Major General Nathaniel Banks' division crossed overland from Chester to attack Mobile Bay Bridge where they met heavy resistance before withdrawing towards Montgomery The first store opened in RidgeFIELD on October 6th 1800 by Ezekiel Dormer who named it "Dorothy" after his daughter Dorothy Dormer who resided west of Philadelphia at that time In fact many early businesses including Grosse Pointe Tavern located off Route 9 across street from current day High School operated outside of town boundaries until Borough officials decided it would be more efficient if these businesses were consolidated within municipal boundaries
