For this reason it is often thought that GE's Laser Sight was actually created by Soviet engineer Pavel Vorobyev while working at RAI’s Radiodromes Division which later merged with GE." Ridgefield is a borough in Norristown, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 20,592 at the 2010 census. Ridgefield is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first European settler in Ridgefield was Nicholas Wall who arrived in 1795 and built a home on what is now Market Street. The name "Ridgefield" was given to the village by General John Monmouth during his military campaign against British forces in 1778. In 1811, John Dickinson purchased of land from Nicholas Wall and developed it into a town site. By 1824, all of Ridgefield had been annexed to Norristown Township. Norristown Township initially consisted of only two square miles (5 km2). However, by 1830, it had grown to include 12 square miles (30 km2). The township's population increased rapidly due to its location near an important rail junction and because new sections were added along the Delaware River as well as through purchases from other townships. In 1851, the township became independent again when it was merged with Burlington Township to form Norristown Borough. Despite this merger, however, Ridgefield continued to be administered within Burlington Township until 1959 when it became its own municipality under Act No. 8 of that year which created municipalities throughout Pennsylvania based on congressional districts instead of township boundaries
