Ridgefield, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey on the Delaware River. The population was 23,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mercer County. Ridgefield was first settled by Germans in 1763 and became part of Princeton Township after that township was formed in 1772 from parts of Monmouth and Middlesex counties. In 1814, Ridgefield became part of the new United States as a result of the American Revolution and it was incorporated as a town in 1825. The name derived from ridge (a high bluff) running north-south between center and east-west streets near its creation. The first settler in Ridgefield was Johann Friedrich Bäcker who arrived there on September 3, 1763 with his family from Margrave's Valley, Palatinate Province of Germany. He built a small house on what is now Main Street and named it "Bäcker's Ferry". For many years he entertained guests along the riverbanks which are still visible today including President George Washington when he visited Princeton in 1800. As early as 1814, when Princeton Township was formed out of parts of Monmouth and Middlesex counties, Ridgefield had aspirations to become its county seat since it lay adjacent to Philadelphia proper on both banks of the Delaware River. However, because Princeton had no vote within Mercer County itself until 1827 when it joined with Burlington Township to form Mercer County Boroughs 1 through 4 respectively (and so also ceased being an independent municipality), this dream died unfulfilled until 1880 when George Wirtz authorized the establishment of what would become known as Camden County without any input from either township or boroughs – setting off yet another round of mergers/divisions within NJ’s largest county causing some residents in these communities to nostalgically reminisce about their onceSeparate municipalities status quo – even if for only a moment! After coming under increasing pressure from nearby Trenton due to its strategic location between two major metropolitan areas (Philadelphia & Trenton), Ridgefield voted to secede from Mercer County on December 6th OF 1888 following ratification by referendum . On May 15th OF 1890 they reincorporated into CamdenCounty but retained their name “Ridgefield” until 1911 when they again changed it to “Camden” due to growing suburbanization that had begun happening throughout North Jersey during that decade; although they have never stopped using “Ridgefields” inside their own community exclusively! In 1951 Mayor John Fenton spearheading an effort spearheaded by then Borough President Robert Jaffe changing zoning regulations allowed for wide spread development outside those traditionally rural agricultural settings which led directly to increased job opportunities for locals while also resulting in increased traffic congestion around town thanks largely to Interstate 95 !! This well known development story can be traced back all the way back TO 1915 WHEN A CONSTRUCTION COMPANY PURCHASED LOTS NEAR THE RIDGEFIELD HIGH SCHOOL AND WENT TO WORK ON BUILDING A NEW SCHOOL !!!!! To this day we ALL KNOW THAT THE PRESENTS DAY AREAS CLOSEST TO I-95 ARE CALLED "RAMIREZ PARK" IN MEMORY OF DR JOHN RAMIREZ WHO WAS ELECTED AS MAYOR OF RIDGEFIELD IN 1951
