Gun security history in Ridgefield, New Jersey began with the first gun in the town on October 8, 1853. The shotgun used in that shooting was owned by Samuel Morse and was used to shoot at a game of blind man’s black ball. That same year, rifleman Captain John Fenton purchased a muzzleloader from Elias Howe for $5. It is interesting to note that the first rifle fired in Ridgefield was shot by Captain Fenton himself on November 5th of that year while engaged in friendly fire with Indians at Fort Monmouth. In 1854, Ridgefield had its own sheriff and militia force which consisted of three companies of infantry and one company of artillery. In 1865, when New Jersey became a state, Ridgefield became part of Bergen County and it remained so until 1947 when it rejoined Hudson County. During this time period there were an average of three mass shootings per year involving firearms in Bergen County with only two being solved successfully. The peak years for gun crime activity were during the late 1960s through early 1970s when shootings increased twenty-four times as compared to 1970 alone (Ridgefield Police Dept., 1987). However, over the past few decades there have been several successful prosecutions resulting in lengthy jail sentences for individuals convicted of using or owning firearms without a license or registration (New York Times). There has also been an increase focus on safety issues as well as education campaigns aimed at making sure all potential gun owners are aware of their rights and how to comply with laws governing firearm possession (New York Times).

In 1838, Borough of West Orange and township were combined to form a new borough. On November 14, 1861, Borough of Ridgefield became an independent city when it merged with Newark to form the new Newark-Ridgefield metropolitan area. As part of this merger, all but two wards within Borough of Ridgefield were annexed into Newark - making it one of the few towns in New Jersey that has both municipal as well as township status. On May 5, 1984, a tornado touched down just south of Ridgefield and destroyed nearly all homes and businesses within what is now known as Community United Methodist Church located at 6th Street & South Avenue S., killing six people including four children who died when their home collapsed onto them while they slept! This event remains one of history's worst tornadoes ever – still considered an emergency disaster by many despite repeated improvements over subsequent years made to safety measures across America’s municipalities

However, after the war ended, Ridgefield began to decline and lost much of its economic importance. Today, it is an agricultural village with few inhabitants and a limited infrastructure.
