Ridgefield is a town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 1000 years and the first Europeans to arrive were the Dutch in 1624. Ridgefield was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1864. It became a borough on April 14, 1903. On December 4 of that year, it became an unincorporated township again. On January 1, 1970 it became a village after being merged with nearby East Amboy Township. Ridgefield is home to the Ridgefield Armory Museum and offers various events throughout the year including rifle & shotgun tournaments and other gun shows which attract many tourists from all over the US and Europe. In addition to these famous landmarks, there are also several small businesses and Park Districts located throughout town as well as several shopping centers nearby.

Ridgefield was originally part of Philadelphia Township but became its own municipality in 1853. The town motto is "Oasis In A Deserted Town." The first settler in Ridgefield was John Purdy. He built a cabin on what is now West Second Street in 1764. Other early settlers included Benjamin Fenton, who arrived in 1768; Moses Warner, who came to Ridgefield in 1772; Jeremiah Day, who arrived in1775; Samuel Gregg, who arrived in1777; David Smith (or Squire) and Nicholas Grosse (or Gouge), both from Philadelphia Township, arriving together on July 10, 1778. On November 15, 1800, Jacob Riis published an article entitled "A Fragment from America," which criticized the condition of American towns and urged citizens to move to rural areas where there were more opportunities for subsistence farming. In 1853, Ridgefield became part ofPhiladelphia Township when it was formed from parts ofMorris and Camden Counties. The township had a population of about 50 residents at the time it merged with Chester County to form new Pennsylvania Union County on January 1st,. After being divided into several civil parishs by President Abraham Lincoln as part of his Gettysburg Address on November 11th 1865,[1] Ridgefield reverted back to its original municipal form effective January 1st 1870[2]. In 1880 the boroughs of Northumberland and Southwark were added to Ridgefield Borough,[3] while neighboring West BloomFIELD became an independent borough on April 14th 1898[4]. During World War II many businesses closed due to rationing policies set by the government during that time period including gas stations along Route 33 near Ringwood Avenue which were among those impacted.[5][6] However some businesses such as J C Penney managed to stay open thanks to their wartime contracts with local Paper Mill companies like Hagerstown Paper Company[7] which produced pulp used for war paper production across America[8]. During that time period many homes also turned into factories or military housing due to shortages caused by mobilization during World War II throughout much of America[9][10]. Some residents still live within these boundaries today although they are no longer affiliated with either borough or township living primarily outside their respective boundaries jurisdictions
Ridgefield was once a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The original town site was laid out in 1795 by Nicholas Ridge and others as part of the Town of Ramapo. It was renamed Ridgefield in 1831 after Major General George Washington's Ridge Farms estate in Virginia. In 1881, the Township of Ridgefield became a Borough within the new county of Monmouthshire. In 1958, the borough was annexed to Princeton Township. On October 1, 1974, Princeton Township formed from portions of Monmouthshire and Ridgefield townships. In recent years, much development has taken place in the area around Ridgefield including a new shopping mall called First Unitarian Church Plaza which opened in 2012 and is home to many local businesses including JCPenney and Macy's department stores as well as a movie theater Regal Cinemas which screens popular blockbusters each weeknight.
